“Right. That guy.”

“Just noise,” Griz said. “Don’t worry about it.”

As it turned out, Kate was right. It took less than an hour for the verdict to come in. Their little group filtered back into the courtroom just in time to hear the verdict be read.

Guilty.

The judge struck his gavel, and before the blow had stopped echoing in the courtroom, the driver was on his feet, shouting at the top of his lungs.

“You’re gonna do me like that?” he cried. “This ain’t fucking justice!”

“Bailiff, remove the defendant,” the judge said, but the Death’s Head member kept shouting, even as he was restrained and dragged from the courtroom.

“You fucking bitch!” he shouted at Becca. “You’re dead! This ain’t over! This ain’t over!”

Finally, the bailiffs dragged him away, and an uneasy quiet fell over the courtroom. Becca felt her heart fluttering in her chest. There was never any real danger… it would’ve been impossible for the man to reach her at all, much less hurt her… but still, all of that raw anger and emotion shouted in her direction had her tingling and breathing fast.

“Forget him,” Griz said, putting a hand on her shoulder. “He’s gone now. It’s done.”

“You did really well, Becca,” Boomer said. “Really well.”

“I didn’t really do much,” Becca said.

“Of course you did,” Boomer said. “You identified the man, even after Death’s Head made an attempt on your life. That’s very brave.”

“And now it’s over,” Kate said, taking her hand and squeezing it. “Things can finally get back to normal.”

“Well, normal-ish,” Becca said. “My life was a disaster zone before all of this, let’s not forget about that.”

“Small potatoes,” Kate said.

“I guess,” Becca said.

Kate was right. Compared to the insanity of the last few days, losing her job seemed like a tiny blip on her radar screen. She’d survived an assassination attempt, witnessed a drive-by and hit and run, and put the driver in prison.

Not to mention, she’d hooked up with a giant biker who she normally would never have given the time of day.

Griz. What was she going to do about Griz? What did shewantto do about Griz?

Becca had no idea. At the time, fooling around with him had been a spontaneous, crazy act, born out of desperate circumstances and an emotional roller coaster ride she never saw coming.

But now, now all of that was over and she could consider getting her life back on track. She could go back to Denver, leave this all behind her, and try to pick up the pieces of her former life.

The question was, did she want to do that? She felt like she was split in half; there was Griz, sitting right next to her, and a part of her thought, maybe. Maybe I’ll see what it’s like to date a Wookie. See where that goes.

The other half of her shouted back, are you insane, this is the last thing you want, get back to lunch meetings in expensive restaurants on an expense account, and negotiating giant fat deals for obscene amounts of money. Leave Chewie and his flannel here and call it a moment of weakness.

He was sweet, though. And loyal, so loyal. More dependable than any man she’d ever known.

But also an outlaw biker. Living a life she could never understand.

Also, that giant beard wasn’t helping. She couldn’t seem to get used to it.

Boomer seemed to read her thoughts, saying, “Well, Becca, it’s over now. You can go back to Denver if you want, or…”

He left the end of the sentence dangling in the air, letting the quiet fill in the possibilities.

Gee, thanks, giant Yoda, she thought.Way to put me on the spot.
