Page 66 of Griz Rides Tall

“Easy, Griz,” Wyatt said, spotting his eagerness. “We let them go in, wait until they come out, and use the van.”

“Right,” Griz said, gripping his shotgun like he was trying to snap it in two. “I’ll take the one with the hat.”

“All right,” Wyatt said. “I guess the other one’s mine. Pony, you switch out with me, get into the front seat. It looks like you won’t need that rifle, so keep it low and out of sight.”

Now Griz felt as fidgety as Devil, as he watched the two Death’s Head members walk their way into the pawn shop like they owned the place. Any minute now. Any minute now, and he could get some payback for what they did to his dad.

“There’s not a lot of people on the street,” Wyatt said, “but still, let’s make sure the only people we hit are the bad guys. No innocent bystanders.”

“I’m not going to miss, Wyatt,” Griz said.

“I know, I’m just saying, you’re super pissed and if you unload like crazy on them, you might…”

“You just worry about your guy,” Griz said, his voice almost a growl.

“Okay, big man,” Wyatt said. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to hen peck you.”

Griz blew out a breath, let himself ease down a notch. “You’re just trying to think things through, like you always do. I know. Let’s just do this.”

“For Boomer,” Wyatt said.

“For Boomer,” Devil repeated.

“For my dad,” Griz said.

Griz kept his eyes on the door of the pawn shop, feeling every second go by. As soon as he saw the two Death’s Head members come out, Devil would pull the van out to intercept them, Wyatt would slide open the door, and he would drop some thunder on his enemies.

Except they didn’t come out. The seconds ticked by, more and more of them, and no sign of the two men they came to kill.

At first Griz thought it was just his nerves, his eagerness for vengeance, that was making time seem like it was going too slowly. But then, the other men in the van began to look around at each other, and Griz knew it wasn’t just him.

“What the hell are they doing in there?” Devil said. “Redecorating the place?”

“I don’t know,” Griz said.

They waited for a few minutes longer, each of them staring at the pawn shop door, waiting with baited breath for Death’s Head to finally come out so that they could make their move. But those long, drawn-out minutes went by with nothing to show for it.

“They really should’ve come out by now,” Wyatt said.

“Yeah,” Griz said.

“Man,” Devil said. “I should’ve brought one of my drones.”

“You have drones?” Pony asked.

“Hell yes, I have drones,” Devil said.

“What would you do with a drone?” Griz said.

“You know,” Devil said with a shrug. “Surveillance. Recon.”

“Dicking around,” Griz said.

“See, that’s you showing your ignorance,” Devil said. “The prospect gets it. Right, Pony?”

“I mean,” Pony said, clearly not sure whose side he should choose, “I guess it depends on what kind of drone you have.”

“Something he bought off of Amazon,” Griz said.
