Page 74 of Griz Rides Tall

That brought a full out laugh from Wyatt, which made Griz smile. He thought Wyatt should always be smiling, always be laughing, and seeing him do it now made some of the anguish at seeing his brother being shot go away for Griz.

“Hell, don’t be sorry,” Wyatt said. “At least one of us is having a good night.”

The brief flicker of happiness faded and the guilt came crashing back in. “I fucked everything up, Wyatt.”

“Don’t,” Wyatt said. “Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Put it all on yourself,” Wyatt said. “It was bad luck, Griz. That’s all. We stumbled into a hornet’s nest.”

“Lucky for us,” Wyatt added, slapping Devil on the arm as he joined them at the table, “we had this crazy mofo there to pull us out of it.”

“Hey, man, that’s what I’m here for,” Devil said, bouncing up and down a little on the balls of his feet. “Solving problems.”

“And Pony,” Wyatt said. “Where is he, anyway?”

“The hospital,” Devil said. “It’s his turn on watch for Boomer.”

Ever since Boomer had been shot, they’d kept one of the brothers at the hospital non-stop. Everybody took a turn to make sure that Death’s Head couldn’t come into the hospital and finish their president off.

“Well, when it comes time to patch him in, he gets my vote,” Wyatt said.

“Mine too,” Griz said, and then frowned.

“What is it, Griz?” Devil said.

“I don’t know. Wyatt says we stumbled into a hornet’s nest, but I can’t help feeling like something was off tonight.”

“Sometimes shit just doesn’t go right, Griz,” Devil said.

“Yeah,” Griz said, but then Ripper was banging on the table loudly with his fist.

“All right everyone, listen up,” Ripper said. “We need to get this shit started. As you can see, Wyatt caught a bullet tonight and I don’t want to keep him here any longer than necessary.”

“I’m fine, Ripper,” Wyatt said.

“Call me sentimental,” Ripper said. “We need to go over what happened tonight. Now, my group made out pretty good. We jacked up two of those Death’s Head pricks real good.”

“Dead?” Griz said.

“If they’re not, they’re well on their way to it,” Ripper said. “We must’ve put a dozen bullets into each of them.”

“And nobody hurt on our end?” Griz said.

“Nope,” Ripper said. “Went like clockwork. We hit ‘em, and then we disappeared.”

“Obviously, our hit didn’t go so well,” Wyatt said, nodding down at his leg.

“From what I heard, it could’ve been worse. A lot worse,” Ripper said. “So what happened?”

Everyone looked at him, but Griz let Wyatt do the talking. He didn’t feel much like saying anything, seeing as how he still felt like he was responsible for the entire situation. Big dumb Griz, causing more problems than he solved, that’s who he was. Better to let Wyatt take the wheel for a while.

“There was a lot more of them than we expected,” Wyatt said. “The two we were supposed to hit went into the pawn shop and stayed there. Me and Griz went to get a closer look, and the whole fucking place turned into a bullet festival.”

“It was crazy, man,” Devil said, fidgeting around in his chair. “There were guns shooting all over the place. Seven, maybe eight guys. Couldn’t really tell because we had to keep our heads down.”

“Luckily,” Wyatt said, “Pony brought an assault rifle, so he was able to shoot enough to keep the bad guys pushed back until we could all get back to the van. After that, we just punched out of there.”
