That sounds perfect, Becca thought.

As it turned out, Kate was right.

Of course she was right. She was always right. And this time around, Becca could really appreciate it.

She and her sister spent the rest of the day talking about nothing, fussing over clothing choices, and otherwise getting ready for their evening out on the town. By the time they actually met up with Wyatt and Griz at the restaurant, Becca’s worries had faded away into the background and she was at ease.

She didn’t even mind when she saw Griz’s jaw visibly drop at the sight of her in her crimson red dress, the one that hugged her tight at all the right spots to show off her curves.Let the Wookie look, she thought, enjoying the attention.Give the big lunk a little thrill, why not?

Becca was so lost in the easy fun of the evening, that she forgot all about her mystery to solve, the Case Of The Mysterious Pants Bulge. They were just sitting down when she remembered it, and almost gave herself away by trying to catch a sidelong look at Griz’s crotch.

No dice. His lower half disappeared behind the table before she could get a good look.

Oh, well, she thought. Not like it matters.

Still, it was needling at the back of her mind all throughout dinner. It must’ve been because it was so inconsequential, she thought, that was why she couldn’t let it go. Just a dumb little mystery to solve, it didn’t mean anything, that was why it was getting under her skin as much as it was.

It was just that she needed a distraction from her disaster zone of a life, some harmless and meaningless silliness to keep her mind occupied on something other than how screwed up her career was. What could be more harmless than figuring out Griz’s package situation, seeing as how she had zero interest in him?

She found herself falling into quite a rhythm of conversation with him, as well, despite her expectations to the contrary. He seemed more than a little interested in the daily life of a corporate attorney.

“How do these deals get started?” he asked.

“Mostly it’s through personal contacts,” Becca said. “You know, somebody over here knows somebody over there, and on some business dinner, someone floats an idea out there.”

“That sounds vague,” Griz said.

“It’s supposed to be,” Becca said. “You’re just feeling each other out at that point, trying to get a sense of what the other person might want or be willing to offer. It’s almost like seduction.”

“Now you’re making it sound dirty,” Wyatt said.

“It’s interesting, though,” Griz said. “It’s really not that different than how different clubs get into deals. Two guys know each other, start shooting the shit, and figure out that there’s some money to be made.”

“There you go, Griz,” Becca said, tipping her wine glass at him. “You’re halfway to being a corporate attorney.”

The easy small talk continued, much more naturally than Becca might’ve guessed. She supposed that it wasn’t the worst thing ever to have the Wookie along to dinner.

The whole time, though, she kept thinking about her little mystery to solve… well, big mystery to solve… and how she might get some more information on the subject. She supposed she could wait until after dinner, when they all got up from the table, but that seemed so far away when her curiosity was demanding to be satisfied now, now, now!

She decided to fake dropping her napkin, making a little show of bending over to pick it up to sell the illusion.Don’t sell it too hard, Becca, she thought, as she dipped below the level of the table.Don’t give yourself away.

It was fruitless. The underside of the table was too dark for her to see a damn thing.

Frustrated with her failure to gain any more clues, she decided that she had to get away from these silly little games before she revealed her hand. It was time for a strategic retreat.

“I’m going to the little girl’s room,” Becca announced.

On cue, Kate got up to go with her. She was always good like that, knowing without being told that it was now time to fall back to a safe space and gossip about what was going on.

As always, the talk began at the sink.

“You and Griz are getting along surprisingly well,” Kate said.

Becca snorted. “Oh, please.”

“No, you are.”
