“I think maybe it might. I think if we play this right, we might be able to get you free and clear of those bullshit drug charges at the same time we drag Harris out into the light.”

“All right,” Pony said. “Then let’s play this right. No taking chances. We plan this out, by the numbers, and don’t take any chances that either one of you ends up out in the cold.”

“Awesome,” Carly said. “How do we do all of that, exactly?”

“Well, the first thing is for me to take this to the Bureau,” Piper said.

Pony frowned. “Are you sure about that?”

“I have people I used to work with that I can reach out to, send them this info. Then we can see if it’s enough to move on Harris.”

“And if not?”

“Then I’ll find out what we will need.”

“Guess you need to make that call then,” Pony said.

“Jane,” Piper said, digging out her phone and scrolling through her contacts before making the call. “She was there with me in Accounting. I know I can reach out to her.”

“You’re sure?” Pony said. “If you’re wrong…”

“No, Jane’s cool,” Piper said, thinking to herself as the phone rang,Jane, please be cool.

Jane’s voice, when it answered, was hushed and whispered, which made sense to Piper. She was probably still at the office and didn’t want anyone knowing who she was talking to.

“Piper,” she said. “What the hell happened to you?”

How much time do you have?Piper thought, but what she said was, “It’s a long story.”

“First you’re like, the golden child of the hour, and now…”

“Wait, what?” Piper said. “What do you mean, golden child of the hour?”

“That bank robbery,” Jane said. “The shootout. The uppity ups couldn’t stop talking about it, what a PR win it was for the Bureau. A female agent taking on multiple suspects alone, comes out on top, and then refuses to leave her undercover assignment but keeps soldiering on.”

Piper couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “They were happy with that?”

“Happy? They were ecstatic. I figured you were going to be showing up on a commemorative coin or something. And then all of a sudden it was like a black curtain came down on you.”

“It’s Harris. He’s setting me up.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes. Listen to me,” Piper said. “Harris is in with Navarro. I don’t know exactly how far back it goes, but it must have been a while.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line. “That’s a heavy, heavy charge, Piper. I mean, Navarro? Cartel Navarro?”

“I know. I’m sending you a file right now. Financial records. It shows how Harris is on the take.”

Another pause, as Piper waited for Jane to look over what she’d sent. “This… this isn’t exactly a smoking gun, Piper.”

“There’s a pattern. Funds go missing, large amounts, like ten, twenty grand at a time. Then they miraculously show backup in his account, with no explanation of where it came from. He doesn’t make that kind of money.”

“Still,” Jane said. “He might have a rich uncle or something.”

“Come on. You know what this looks like. Gambling. He’s losing big, over and over, and someone is paying back his markers.”

“Maybe. But that isn’t clear from these records. He could bullshit his way out of this.”
