“You keep saying that,” Piper said. “So let me try to guess. You’re in so deep with Navarro and the cartel that you’re willing to set up another federal agent to get her killed?”

“I didn’t have a choice,” Harris said, still hunched over a little in pain from Piper’s kick.

“Everyone has a choice,” Pony said.

“It started off small. I didn’t know that it…”

“Save it,” Piper said. “Save it for the judge. Save it for the Bureau. And yes, you will be telling the Bureau that…”

As she spoke, Piper saw a small, bright red dot show up on the center of Harris’s chest. A split second later, just as she realized what it was, she felt something crash into her, taking both her and Harris to the floor just as there was a tiny, musical tinkle of breaking glass.

Pony. It had been Pony, dragging both her and Harris down and out of the line of fire just as the sniper who was on the other end of that red laser sight had pulled the trigger.

“Are you okay?” Pony said. “There was…”

“A laser sight,” Piper finished for him, staying flat on the floor. “I’m good. Harris?”

“Ah, fuck,” Harris groaned. “I think you landed on my balls again.”

“Good. Are you shot?”

“It fucking hurts.”

“Are you shot?” she said again, smacking Harris across the side of the head.

“No.No.”

“Piper,” Pony whispered, pointing at the wall.

There, a small neat hole had been punched by the impact of a bullet. The red laser sight dot was next to it, moving slowly across the wall. The unseen sniper was sweeping the room with his scope, no doubt.

She craned her neck, careful to stay low below the window and out of the line of fire. Up above her, there was another neat hole punched through the glass where the bullet had first entered the room.

“I didn’t even hear the shot,” she said.

“Suppressed,” Pony said.

“All I saw was the laser sight.”

“Laser sight, high-end suppressor, no doubt a magnifying scope,” Pony said, hunkered down next to her on the floor. “Guy’s got some serious hardware, whoever he is.”

“I’ll tell you who it is,” Harris said with a bitter laugh. “The cartel. You idiots. You see? I tried to tell you, you have no idea what you’re dealing with. Now you’re screwed. They’re going to come in here and wipe the two of you out.”

“The laser sight was on you, dickhead,” Pony said.

Harris’s face turned white. “What?”

As if on cue, Harris’s cell phone began to ring. Piper traded a look with Pony, who shrugged.

She dug Harris’s phone out of his pocket and swiped on the call, putting it on speaker so they all could hear.

“Good evening, Steven,” the voice on the phone said. “And, I presume, the other two individuals with you are also listening in, as well.”

“Navarro,” Pony said, spitting out the name like it was venom.

“Ah, that must be Pony, my old friend,” Navarro said. “How fortunate that you are the one I see in there with Harris.”

“How’s that?”
