“Take that road out of town,” he said, gesturing with his pistol. “Toward the clubhouse.”

“Hang on,” she said, yanking the wheel hard. “Grab on to something.”

The Charger skidded sideways, tires squealing with protest, and then shot off down the road Pony had indicated. The headlights in her rear view momentarily disappeared; the cartel vehicles weren’t able to keep up with that level of maneuver.

The sudden shift in momentum of the car send Pony flying forward from his position shooting out of the window, and he crashed forward into the dashboard and windshield. He shook himself, glaring at Piper silently.

Piper shrugged. “I said, grab on to something.”

“I'm driving next time,” he said.

“Nag, nag, nag.”

“Did we lose them?” he said, looking behind them as they sped along the dark road.

Headlights, again, in her rear view, and Piper shook her head.

“Nope. I think there’s a third car, now.”

“Damn. Fuckers are coming out of the woodwork.”

“Maybe if you SHOT them.”

“I am shooting them.”

“Shoot better.”

“Nag, nag, nag,” he said, leaning out the window again to shoot at their pursuers.

A thumping sound in the trunk made him pause.

“What was that?” Pony said. “Were we hit? Did we lose a tire?”

Piper thought for a second, then said, “Oh. I know. It’s just Harris, getting tossed around in the trunk when I made that turn.”

“Good,” Pony said with a nod. “Do it again.”

Piper kept pushing the Charger hard, as hard as she dared, weaving back and forth as much as she could to keep them from being an easy target. All along, Pony shot his pistol back at the three cars chasing them, leaning out of the passenger side window.

Another close call as an incoming bullet dinged off of the edge of the Charger. It was a side-swipe of a hit, not head on. Any bullet would easily punch its way through the car if it hit squarely head-on.

Piper shook her head. “Pony. I don’t know how long we can keep this up.”

“I know. Sooner or later one of their bullets is going to get lucky.”

“What should I do?”

“Keep doing what you’re doing,” he said. “Stay on this road.”

He paused for a moment, getting out his phone and tapping on the screen.

“Who are you calling?” Piper said.

“Devil.”

“Ah, shit.”

“He’ll come through,” Pony said, then into the phone, “Are you guys all set?”
