Or, she could rush off after Black Tooth and get the answers she needed about Pony and the MC.

“Fuck it,” she said, and grabbed the racing jacket off of the hook on her way out of the front door of the cabin. On her short run to the two motorcycles left, she holstered her pistol and pulled on the jacket, making her best educated guess as to which bike went with the keys in her pocket.

Luck was with her. The bike she chose started up when she turned the key, and after taking a second to pull on the helmetthat was hanging on the handlebars of the bike, she hit the throttle hard and took off in pursuit of Black Tooth.

Of course, it couldn’t be that easy. By the time Piper got to the end of the dirt lane leading back to the road, Black Tooth was out of sight.

Right, or left? There was no way for her to know.

Piper pulled off her helmet. Her hearing was starting to come back, now, and as she tried to decide which way to go, she swore she heard the sound of a car horn off to her left. It was distant, but it seemed like the kind of protracted, long blast that an angry motorist sounded after nearly being in a wreck with an idiot of a driver.

“That has to be him,” she said to herself.

Piper took a moment to get her helmet back on, then gunned the throttle as hard as she could, speeding off in pursuit of the last bank robber.

Pony was leaning on his bike, parked at the small gas station near the dirt road leading to the cabin, when he heard the engines. Two of them, Harleys by the sound, and sure enough, he saw Wyatt and Devil pull into the parking lot and come to a stop next to him.

“Wyatt,” Pony said. “Devil. Just the two of you?”

“We were the closest,” Wyatt said. “Griz and Jocko are on the way. They’re bringing Kevlar vests from the clubhouse.”

“Good idea,” Pony said. “Did you guys bring anything?”

“I was home, so I brought my gauge,” Devil said, digging a sawed-off shotgun out of his canvas backpack. “Griz and Jocko will bring a few more.”

“Once they’re here, we go in,” Wyatt said. “I don’t want these jackasses causing any more trouble around here.”

“I’d say three guys for the front door and two for the back would be best,” Pony said. “We’ll have to watch our crossfire but we don’t want these guys rabbiting out the back.”

“Yeah,” Devil said. “Then we’d have to chase them through the woods. And I hate running. So much effort.”

“As much coffee as you drink, you’d think that you’d be okay with a little exercise,” Wyatt said.

“I gave up coffee,” Devil said.

Pony asked, “Since when?”

“Like, at least two days ago. I just drink energy drinks now.”

“Yeah,” Wyatt said. “That’s totally different.”

“How many have you had?” Pony said.

“Today?” Devil said, thinking it over. “Four, I think? No, five. Five.”

Wyatt rolled his eyes. “No wonder you can’t keep a thought in your head.”

“That’s rude,” Devil said. “And untrue. That tracking device I gave to Pony worked just fine, didn’t it?”

“Please,” Wyatt said. “I’ll bet Benny made that thing and you just pretended that you made it.”

“What… why would you say that?” Devil said.

Wyatt said, “Because it actually worked.”

“That hurts my feelings, man,” Devil said.
