“Things got a little out of hand at work today, but it all worked out okay,” Piper said, not entirely sure about that last part. “I’m okay. I promise.”

“Piper, please,” Carly said. “You are the most important thing to me in this world and it would kill me if you got hurt.”

“Carly…”

“I’m being serious. Ever since this whole thing happened with the drug charges, my whole world has been turned upside down and I don’t know which way is up. But you were there for me, and that’s the one thing I knew I could count on. Up might become down, left might become right, but my sister was going to look out for me. And that means everything to me.”

Piper was trying to come up with a response that would be sufficient to calm her sister down when her phone began to buzz. When it rains, it pours, she thought, digging out the phone.

“Piper…” Carly said.

“I have to take this,” Piper said, holding up her phone like a doctor’s note to get out of work. “I’m sorry, I have to. It’s work.”

She fled her own home, phone pressed to her ear, before Carly’s protests could hold her fast in place. Out of the frying pan, into the fire. It was Harris.

“What the hell were you thinking?” he said.

Piper said, “Sir?”

“Don’t ‘sir’ me. Going in alone, against three armed suspects?”

“That wasn’t my intention.”

“What was your intention?”

Good question, she thought, but what she said was, “Just to gather some intel. See what those three were up to, try to ascertain what their connection was to the MC, if anything.”

“And did you find anything?”

“It escalated pretty quickly,” Piper said, feeling like it was the understatement of the year. “I got spotted, and then one of the suspects engaged from the cabin. In the course of defending myself…”

“Save the office speak for the official debrief, Special Agent,” Harris said. “You goofed up, you got spotted, you got into a shootout and killed two suspects. What happened to number three? Were you able to question him?”

“No. He fled the scene while I was dealing with the other two.”

“Oh, fantastic. And then you stole one of their bikes?”

“Commandeered,” was the best she could come up with on the spot.

“Don’t play with me, Special Agent.”

“I’m not… I’m not trying to. I took one of their bikes to pursue the suspect who got away.”

“But?”

“But I ran right into three members of the MC. Including Pony.”

Now Harris seemed more interested than angry. “They were there? At the cabin?”

“No, nearby. It looked to me like the suspect dumped his bike by a gas station near the cabin. The three MC brothers were there with him.”

“Meeting the third suspect?”

“I don’t know,” Piper said. “But they saw me.”

There was a pause, then, “Are you burned?”

“No. I don’t think so. I was wearing one of the suspect’s jackets and a full helmet. Pony and Wyatt chased after me, but…”
