“Well. Let’s see,” Piper said. “My federal agent boss just tried to extort me into planting evidence, which I very nearly did. Then, after I removed the evidence, he went in to the clubhouse with a warrant, thinking the planted evidence would be there, which it wasn’t. So now he looks like a complete jackass to everyone at the Bureau. Which he will definitely be taking out on me.”

“But he can’t do that to you,” Carly said. “Make you do illegal things like that.”

“He can do whatever the hell he wants.”

“No.”

“Nobody knows what I’m doing at the MC, Carly,” Piper said. “Not really. A few people at the FBI might know I’m undercover but only Harris knows the details. So he can spin whatever story he wants to and make it look like I’m the one breaking the law.”

“Oh.”

Piper looked at her sister and frowned in confusion. “Are you wearing my Kevlar vest?”

“What?Oh, yeah.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know,” Carly said, tugging at the bulletproof vest. “Feels kind of good. The weight, I mean. I feel like a turtle in its shell or something. Protected. I feel like I can kind of suck inside of it and be safe.”

Piper snorted. “That would be nice.”

“What evidence did he want you to plant?”

“This,” Piper said, dropping the heavy bag between them.

“A paper bag?”

“A paper bag full of heroin, Carly.”

Carly peeked into the top of the bag like it was full of poisonous snakes. “That’s heroin?”

“Yeah.”

“I’ve never seen it before.”

“Oh, Christ,” Piper said, clapping both hands to her forehead. “That reminds me. I totally forgot about you and your case. God, this is so fucked now.”

“I told you not to worry about my case.”

“I have to, Carly. I have to. Who’s going to get you out of that if I don’t…”

Piper trailed off, not knowing how to finish that sentence.

“I don’t know what to do,” she finally said. “I don’t know what to do. Everything’s spun out of control.”

“Well. At least you didn’t plant that heroin. You would’ve never forgiven yourself for that.”

Piper said, “Maybe I should have planted it.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“No. I guess I don’t.”

“You’ve always stuck to your guns. Always. So don’t stop now. Your boss must be pretty fucked in the head to go so far as to try to make you commit a felony just because… why would he do that, anyway?”

“That’s actually kind of a good question,” Piper said.

“I mean, it seems extreme, doesn’t it? Even if he does have a big FBI boner to bust the MC?”
