“Why would he do that?”

“He wants a clear supply line north through this area. We’re standing in the way of that.”

Carly said, “So why would Piper’s boss be so convinced that you guys… you biker guys… are working with… what’s his name? Bizarro?”

“Navarro.”

“I’ll tell you one thing,” Pony said. “Those hitters tonight were cartel killers, all the way.”

“Maybe,” Piper said. “I think you might be right about that.”

“How can you tell?”

“Guys with that many bodies on them have a certain look,” Pony said. “And, the one had a neck tattoo that I’m pretty sure was a cartel marking.”

“So, wait, the cartel just knew when to show up?”

“No, Carly,” Piper said. “Harris. He had them waiting.”

“Kept your sister talking, and distracted, while those two gunmen moved up on her.”

“Harris is working for Bizzar… Navarro?” Carly said. “This is too intense! He’s an FBI guy!”

“Navarro must be paying him, or have something on him,” Piper said. “Whatever it is, it must be pretty major, to convince a federal agent to set up another agent to be killed.”

“Are the cartel killer guys the ones who shot you?”

“Yeah.”

“But you shot them back or something?” Carly said. “How did you get away?”

“Pony,” Piper said.

“Did you come to her rescue? That’s so hot! Wait, that came out weird. I meant, um, that it was very nice of you,” Carly said, then her eyes got big and she added, “Oh, but she’s a… and you’re a… oh, this is really awkward.”

It was quiet in the room after that, a heavy quiet that hung over all of them and weighed down any attempt at saying more words. Finally, after the quiet became worse than the effort needed to break it, Piper spoke.

“I’m not going to apologize for being a cop, Pony.”

Pony said, “Of course you aren’t.”

“I became a federal agent because I believed in what I was doing. Because I wanted to make a difference.”

“A difference.”

“I, uh…” Carly said, standing up off of the bed and collecting her purse, “I’m going to… go… find the vending machines, I think. Just going to let you two have a nice private chat. Yeah.”

With that, she fled the room, the door clicking behind her with a loud metallic clunk. Piper gave it another second or two, trying to find the right place to start.

“I told you I was an Accounting major,” she said. “When I graduated, everyone else in my major was scrambling to find some entry level gig at a giant corporate monstrosity. And that just tasted like ashes in my mouth.”

“So you joined the FBI.”

“I wanted to do something different with my life. Not just move numbers from one column on a spreadsheet to another. I wanted to look back on my career and say that I made things better.”

“You call this making things better?” Pony said. “Pretending to be something you’re not? Lying to people? Lying to me?”

“That’s not… it wasn’t like that. Not when I joined. I only got into undercover later. Harris got me into it. Made me think that I was taking the fight to the cartel.”
