“For us as well as you,” Boomer said. “Start with telling us who you really are and what you were doing here.”

“All right,” Piper said. “My name really is Piper. I’m a federal agent.”

Groans and grumbles all around the table, until Boomer had to bang a fist on the table to get everyone to quiet down.

“Let her talk, goddamnit,” he said. “Go ahead.”

“I joined the FBI right out of college.”

“What was your major?” Devil said.

Griz swatted him one on the arm. “Devil, what the fuck, man?”

“What? I’m curious. What does an FBI agent study?”

“I didn’t start off planning to join the FBI,” Piper said. “I was an Accounting major.”

“Seriously?” Devil said. “Pony, is she serious?”

Pony said, “I was surprised, myself.”

“The FBI has lots of accountants,” Piper said. “Tracking money is a big part of how we catch people. And for the first few years of my career, that’s what I did. I rode a desk, and read spreadsheets, and tracked money, and caught people doing money laundering and similar crimes.”

Devil shook his head and said, “I’m sorry. I can’t see it. I can’t see you riding a desk like that.”

“How did you get into undercover work?” Wyatt asked.

“A little while ago, I got approached by a senior agent. Harris.”

“That fucking guy that was here with his nose up our ass?” Griz said.

“That’s the one. He said he was part of a task force connected to cartel activity, particularly one that was trying to press up into this part of the United States.”

“What does that have to do with us?” Griz said.

“Let her tell it, man,” Wyatt said. “Why did he approach you?”

“I wasn’t sure why, at first. He said he needed someone who wanted to take the fight to the cartel in a real way. He arranged for me to join in on an investigation that took us to Juarez, and there… I saw how bad things can get. The worst was a bombing.”

“It was a school,” Pony added. “Kindergarten.”

Wyatt seemed to be speaking for all the brothers when he said, “Damn.”

“Bodies everywhere,” Piper said. “All done as a show of power from one cartel over another.”

“And a bunch of dead kids as collateral damage,” Pony said.

The more Piper told her story again, the more Pony found himself chiming in, taking her side. The more she talked, the more he felt like, given the same situation, he would’ve done the exact same thing, even would’ve made the same mistakes.

“Right,” Piper said. “After seeing that, I’d do anything to keep it from happening here in the States.”

“Which is why Harris sent you there in the first place. Isn’t that right?” Boomer said.

“Yeah. He needed an undercover agent to stop the cartel from creating an incursion here, and after I saw what I saw…”

“Okay, I get all that, but still,” Jocko said, cutting her off. “What does any of that have to do with us?”

“Harris said your MC was involved with a cartel middle manager named Navarro.”
