“Oh gawd,” she moaned. “We’re all unemployed.”

Ash snorted. “Damn. Now what do we do?”

Piers searched Sylvee’s eyes. The answer was as plain as the jagged mountains that cut into the sky. “We’ll raise babies with Sylvee.”

“Oh guys. I love you both so much!” She threw her arms out, gathering them in. Piers’s chest boiled with love as he wrapped both of his lovers close.

Ash gripped her with one hand and hooked his other around Piers’s nape. “We’ve got savings enough to hold us for a while.”

She issued a throaty laugh. “So do I. Between what I have and what Charlie agrees to pay me for my cut of the firm, we can live in Alaska forever if we’re smart and invest right.”

Piers didn’t usually let his emotions overcome him…but his throat trapped any words. That didn’t mean he couldn’t express what he was feeling.

He drew Sylvee’s lips to his and kissed her long and deep…before he turned to Ash and did the same.

Chapter Sixteen

“Hey, Piers! Wait up!”

He turned to see a Boot Knocker strolling toward him. Shaw was one of the good guys; Piers would miss him. He was always a worthy adversary in any sport, and was undefeated at ice hockey, and no wonder—the guy was a former NHL player.

Carrying a box of his belongings, Piers paused for Shaw to catch up.

He reached Piers and looked him over. “So it’s true. You and Ash are leaving us.”

Dammit. He’d spent most of the day battling his feelings about their resignation. Now his throat clamped shut.

Ducking his head in a nod, he hid his expression from his friend.

Shaw tugged off his hat and ran his fingers through his hair. “Never thought I’d see the day.”

“It’s time.”

For a long heartbeat, they didn’t speak.

“I’ll walk with you to the truck.” Shaw’s offer to keep him company was the best thing he could ask for right now.

They set off walking toward a gravel lot around the back of the lodge where all their personal vehicles were parked. The urge to turn right back around, to put the box back in his personal quarters, was strong.

They reached his truck, a black Chevy that had seen better days. Since his arms were full, Shaw lowered the tailgate, and he placed the box into the bed.

Standing back, he braced his hands on his hips.

Shaw eyed him. “What made you quit? From what I hear, we’re all off the hook with the big guys—they gave up trying to find out who fathered Avril’s child.”

“That isn’t the reason. It’s our client.”

Shaw’s brows shot up. “Seriously?”

“Yeah. She’s an old friend from high school. Someone we never stopped thinking about.”

Slowly nodding in understanding, Shaw leaned on the truck, settling in to hear more. “So it was only a matter of time before the universe brought her back to you.”

He stared at his friend. Those words resonated, touching a deep knowledge that it was truth.

“I believe so.” His voice pitched low.

“Any plans for where you’ll work?”
