She bit her lower lip. “Ridge,” she purred, her hands sliding up my chest as I rose above her. “I want you inside me.”

My wolf roared to life, my body trembling with the need to claim her. I positioned myself between her legs, the head of my erection pressing against her slick entrance.

“Please,” she begged. “Fuck me.”

That was all the encouragement I needed. With a slow, steady thrust, I eased into her tight heat, our bodies joining together in the most primal way possible. Her gasp of pleasure echoed through the room, fueling my own arousal.

“Shit, you feel amazing,” she moaned, her nails digging into my shoulders.

“Likewise, my love,” I grunted, pulling out slightly before thrusting back in, finding a rhythm that elicited breathy sighs and soft whimpers from both of us.

“Harder,” she commanded, her voice laced with desire. “Don’t hold back.”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive,” she breathed. “I can handle it.”

“All right, then,” I murmured, increasing the force and speed of my thrusts until our bodies collided in a symphony of flesh and passion.

“Fuck, yes!” Tori screamed, arching her back to meet my every thrust. “That’s it, Ridge! Just like that!”

I let go of any lingering reservations, pounding into her with wild abandon. Our lovemaking was a whirlwind of teeth and sweat, nails and skin, our connection stronger than ever as we moved in perfect harmony.

“I’m so close,” Tori panted, her eyes clenched shut.

“Me too, love,” I admitted, my entire being focused on this singular moment in time.

“Come with me,” she begged, her voice strained with the effort of holding back her climax.

With those words, we both spiraled over the edge, waves of ecstasy crashing over us as we reached the pinnacle of our desire. I clung to Tori, burying my face in the crook of her neck as my release filled her, the scent of our passion filling the room.

“Fuck,” I gasped, struggling to catch my breath. “That was incredible.”

“Agreed,” Tori murmured, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on my sweat-slicked back.

Exhausted and euphoric, our bodies intertwined, the heat radiating from Tori’s flushed skin. The remnants of our passion still hummed through our veins as we lay tangled on the plush rug in front of the fireplace. Our breathing slowly returned to normal, my heart beating in time with Tori’s.

The shrill ring of my phone shattered the tranquility, an unwelcome reminder of the world waiting just beyond the walls of our sanctuary. I hesitated, torn between my desire to stay with Tori and my ingrained sense of duty.

Tori pressed a gentle kiss to my chest and murmured, “You should answer it.”

Reluctantly, I reached for my phone, pressing it to my ear. “Ridge speaking.”

“Hello, Ridge,” came the voice of one of the municipal officials from Blackwood Creek’s city council. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything important, but I wanted to remind you that the local elections are coming up in a few months. We need to discuss campaigns, endorsements, and all that good stuff.”

I sighed. “Of course,” I said, my mind already racing ahead to the myriad tasks that awaited me.

Lying there with Tori, our bodies entwined, her steady breath against my chest, the world beyond seemed distant and unimportant, but the ringing of my phone had brought reality crashing back. As I ended the call with the councilman, I was reminded of the heavy responsibilities that waited for me outside this peaceful cocoon.

“Everything okay?” Tori asked softly, her fingers tracing idle circles on my skin.

I forced a smile, not wanting to burden her with my worries. “Just some election stuff,” I said, trying to sound casual. Even as I spoke, my thoughts were already spiraling, consumed by the countless challenges that lay ahead.

When I’d first arrived back in Blackwood Creek, Christie Greenthorne’s father had been the alpha and was ready to retire, but he knew his vapid daughter and son-in-law weren’t alpha material. He’d approached me and admitted he’d been waiting for me to return to take my rightful place as the alpha—a role a member of the Blackwood family had held for generations. At his urging, we had a symbolic fight for power, and after that, it hadn’t taken long for me to establish myself as alpha. So when the opportunity arose to step up as mayor, I took it, determined to keep the town safe from those who would exploit its people, both shifter and human alike. Now, with everything else going on, the idea of another grueling campaign weighed heavily on me.

“Ridge,” Tori said, “you can talk to me about it, you know.”

I hesitated, then sighed. She was right. “It’s just…sometimes, it’s too much,” I said in barely more than a whisper. “Running for mayor again, managing the pack, the businesses, my family’s assets. I’m spread so thin, and I don’t want to let anyone down.”
