The odds sucked, but Dev had to buy Kiana enough time to get past the three tattooed gang members.

When the biggest guy started to go around him, Dev stuck out his foot and jammed his shoulder into the man at the same time. The man tripped and fell like a ton of bricks, sprawling across the floor on his hands and knees.

When the other two men came at Dev, he bent low and plowed into the first guy like a linebacker. That man fell backward, knocking into the man behind him. They both fell to the floor in a tangle of arms and legs.

Kiana darted out of the hallway and ran.

She’d only gone three steps when the big guy on the floor snagged her ankle.

She staggered and fell to her knees.

Dev spun and kicked the guy hard in the kidney and then stomped on the arm holding Kiana’s ankle.

The man loosened his hold enough that Kiana rolled away and scrambled to her feet.

By that time, the two men who’d fallen in a heap on the floor were on their feet.

One man jumped onto Dev’s back.

Kiana was halfway across the barroom floor when she glanced over her shoulder.

“Run!” Dev yelled.

Instead, she stopped, turned and grabbed an empty chair.

“No, no, no,” Dev muttered. “Run, Kiana!”

The man on his back hooked his arm around him and punched Dev in the face.

Dev grabbed the man’s elbow, bent at the waist and flipped him over his head. The man landed on the big guy trying to climb to his feet.

“Dev, duck!” Kiana yelled as she rushed toward him.

He ducked and rolled automatically as she swung the chair toward the position where he’d been standing.

The chair caught the other man who’d come up behind him. It hit him square in the chest but not hard enough to take him down.

Instead, he caught the chair, flung it to the side and rushed toward Kiana.

Dev jumped on the man’s back and wrapped an arm around his neck in a chokehold.

The two men on the floor leaped to their feet. Both men ran toward Kiana.

“For God’s sake, Kiana, run!” Dev yelled.

The stubborn woman grabbed another chair and pointed the legs at the two men like it would do anything to stop them.

The big man Dev had kicked in the kidney batted the chair from Kiana’s hands.

Kiana stepped backward until her back ran into a tall man dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and dark sunglasses.

The man pulled Kiana behind him into the arms of another man dressed in a white polo shirt and khaki slacks.

The man in the Hawaiian shirt stood in front of the two tattooed men with his arms crossed. “Hey, Dev, it appears you have your hands full. Do you want us to take out the trash?”

George Ingram took off the dark sunglasses, folded them and tucked them into his shirt pocket.

Dev would’ve sighed with relief if he hadn’t been gritting his teeth. He tightened his arm around the throat of the man whose back he was still riding. “If you don’t have anything...better to...do.”
