“Will she be alone?” Dev asked.

“She should be. Sometimes, one of the other girls from the gang stops by to visit.”

Dev shook his head and handed Silas his cell phone. “Use my phone. If she’s not alone, the other person in the room might wonder why you’re calling.”

He nodded, took the phone and entered the number.

Kiana worried that Silas would trick them and call his boss, Rocko.

“Hey, babe, don’t hang up, it’s me,” Silas said. “Yeah, I borrowed a buddy’s phone. Are you alone?” He paused, listening, his gaze going to Dev. Silas gave a quick nod and continued, “I have a surprise for you and the baby. Pack a diaper bag and an overnight bag for yourself. No, I don’t need anything. A friend of mine is going to be by in a few minutes. His name is...”

Dev whispered, “Rex.”

“Rex,” Silas said into the phone. “He’s going to take you and the baby to a surprise destination. I’ll meet you there. Yes, you can trust him. No, babe, I’m fine. Just go with him and don’t tell anyone you know where you’re going. I don’t want them to be jealous or anything. Yeah, babe, it’ll just be the three of us. See you soon. Love you, too.” He ended the call and handed the cell phone to Dev. “She’s not buying it.”

“Will she go with Rex?” Kiana asked.

“I think so. She’s smart and knows that, because I’m a member of the Demons, things can be dangerous between us and other gangs and within the organization. She’ll get out.”

“Will she tell anyone else?” Kiana asked, worried for Rex.

Silas shook his head. “I told her not to tell. She won’t.”

“What about her mother, sisters, brothers?” Dev asked.

He gave a tight smile. “We’re all the family she has, me and the baby.”

“What about your parents or siblings?” George asked.

“My folks and my brother are dead. Lacy and the baby are all the family I have. I used to think the Demons were family, but I’ve seen them cut members down without batting an eye. When I met Lacy, I’d have left them if I could.”

“They don’t let you leave unless it’s toes up?” Logan guessed as he opened the sliding door of a black van with tinted windows.

“Exactly,” Silas climbed into the vehicle, followed by Dev and George.

“Logan will drive,” George said.

“Kiana, you can ride back here with us so no one spots you.”

Logan drove the van to the small office building they’d rented for their stay on Oahu. It was an older building in need of paint. Above the office on the ground floor, there appeared to be living quarters.

“This is where we landed when we were assigned to Oahu,” George said as they drove around to the back, where there was enough room for four vehicles to park.

Once they were inside the building, Dev left George and Logan with Silas in a small kitchen at the back. He hooked Kiana’s arm and walked into the front out of earshot of the others.

“Will George and Logan be able to keep Silas from making a break for it?” she asked, looking over her shoulder.

Dev nodded as he pulled out his cell phone and dialed a number. “They can handle him. I wanted to make a call in private.”

“Do you want me to leave?” Kiana started to turn.

He snagged her arm and shook his head as he pressed the phone to his ear. “Hawk, Dev here. We got information from one of the members of the Order of Demons. I don’t know how reliable it is, but we’re going with it. If it’s all he says it is, we’ll need a lot more backup.”

Dev filled his boss in on what had transpired and what could potentially happen that night. He was asking for help, knowing the night ahead would be dangerous.

As Kiana listened to the one-sided conversation, her pulse quickened. The more time she spent with Dev, the more she wanted. They’d be heading into a dangerous situation that night. Anything could happen. Silas said the gang would kill anyone who got in the way of their drug exchange.

She prayed it wouldn’t be Dev.
