“Okay. I’ll go,” Silas said. “But I want off the island on the next flight out.”

“Deal.” Dev spoke into his headset. “Acquired our informant, headed for the van.”

“Roger,” Hawk responded. “Wrapping up here. Swede’s HPD contact is inbound with reinforcements to process our captives.”

Dev frowned. “Will they be released like before?”

“No. One of Rocko’s guys offered up the names of the officers taking kickbacks in trade for lighter sentences. We’re shutting down the Order of the Demons.”

“Good.” Dev was happy to hear their efforts wouldn’t be in vain. “And the drugs?”

“We have them. Sent images to Swede. He’s working to locate the manufacturer.”

“Heading to the van now,” Dev said.

“Roger,” Hawk responded.

As Dev started to walk, Silas shot out a hand to stop him. “Let’s take my bike.”

Happy to get there faster, Dev followed Silas to where he’d stashed his motorcycle and climbed on behind the big guy.

Dev directed Silas toward the location where they’d left the van, careful to keep an eye out for trouble. A stray gang member could be lurking in the shadows, ready to get revenge.

“George,” Dev said into his mic. “Do you copy?”

George didn’t answer. He tried two more times. He’d just spoken to Hawk. Had his mic quit working in that short amount of time? He turned to Rex. “Something must be wrong with my mic. Try raising George.”

Rex spoke into his mic, “George, do you copy?”

Again, no response.

Dev frowned. “Kiana? Can you hear me?”

They were getting near to the location.

Silas rounded the corner of the building and entered the alley where they’d left the van.

“Stop!” Dev shouted.

Silas skidded to a halt.

Dev jumped off the back of the motorcycle and stood in an empty alley.

His heart plummeted into his belly.

“You sure this is the right place?” Silas asked, still seated on his bike.

“Yes,” Dev said. “Where are they?”

At that moment, his headset erupted in static. “This is George,” a voice said that didn’t sound at all like the man. “We were...attacked.” He drew in a ragged breath as if he was struggling to breathe. “They took...Kiana.”

Chapter 15

“Kiana.”

She heard her name as if it came from the end of a long, dark tunnel.

“Kiana.”
