Then she remembered the pendant Dev had given her with the tracking device. She almost cried when she couldn’t feel the pendant where it had nestled between her breasts nor the chain that had secured it around her neck.

Had she lost it in the crash, or had Mercer stripped it off her when he’d brought her into his compound?

She prayed Dev and his team had found the van by now and that they had figured out where she’d been taken. She also prayed for them to do it in less than the hour she and Meredith had left.

“For what it’s worth,” Meredith said, “we’ve been sisters even before we knew we were. I love you, Kiana.”

“I love you, Meredith. Or should I call you Bobbi Jo?” Kiana forced a laugh. “It would’ve been nice to get to know our little sister.”

Meredith smiled. “From our conversations online, I’d say she has our sense of humor. She sounded like an awesome young woman despite her illness.”

Kiana’s lips pressed into a tight line. “I’m not ready to give up. I want to get to know Dev better. He promised to take me out on a date. Damn it, I’m going on that date.”

“You like him, don’t you?” Meredith said.

Kiana nodded. “I do.”

“I’ve been following you. I was there when the Demons converged on the Big Wave.”

“You were the one who told us to get out.” Kiana laughed softly. “I should’ve known.”

“I’m sorry I wasn’t able to warn you soon enough that time,” Meredith said. “I followed the van to where you set up for the drug exchange. I parked my rental car a block away and picked a position where I could watch the road leading up to the building behind which your van was parked. I saw the Demons’ SUV coming.”

“And you called to warn us.” Kiana’s heart warmed at her friend’s concern. “I recognized your voice that time. I got out of the alley but wasn’t fast enough. When I came to the T-intersection, I had to turn one way or the other. I had no choice.”

“I know,” Meredith said. “I cut through the streets on foot and was there when the Demons crashed into the van. While they were pulling themselves together, I dragged you free.”

“Is that how they caught you?”

“Yeah. You were out cold. A dead weight. I couldn’t lift you or drag you fast enough to get you out of sight.”

“Meredith, where was Jason? Why wasn’t he with you?” Kiana asked.

“Ha,” Meredith laid her head back. “I told him someone was after me and might come to him, looking for me. He packed a bag and left for Kauai to stay with some friends there.”

Kiana’s fists clenched. “He didn’t offer to take you with him?”

“Yeah. But I wanted to know who’d killed my client.”

“Jason should have stayed with you,” Kiana said softly.

“It was easier for me to stay under everyone’s radar if I was alone. Jason would have slowed me down,” Meredith said. “Besides, I think we were drifting apart.”

Kiana snorted. “If he’d given a damn about you and your relationship, he wouldn’t have left you.”

Meredith sighed. “We were done, anyway.”

Kiana’s heart hurt for her friend. “Do you know what happened to George, the man in the van with me?”

Meredith shook her head. “The gang was on me before I could get too far. They loaded us into the van they were driving and a jabbed needle into my arm. I never had a chance to look back at the wreckage.”

“I hope he’s okay.” Kiana hoped the entire team had made it through the mission without serious injuries.

Once again, she tried to rock the gurney hard enough to make it turn over.

With the wheels banging against the floor, she didn’t hear the door open or close again. It wasn’t until a voice said, “Be still,” that she realized someone had entered the room.

Kiana lay back against the gurney and stared into the deep brown eyes of a beautiful, ethereal young woman with a thin face and high cheekbones.
