“Cory?” she asked quietly, guilt and concern filling her face.

“You’ve never been at a full moon when it peaked,” I repeated, needing to verify I had heard her correctly. She nodded, biting her lip again.

“Stop that,” I said, distracted momentarily.

“What?”

“Stop biting your lip. It makes me want to kiss you again,” I complained, and she blushed.

“We’ve never been together when the moon peaked,” I talked to myself. I walked to the little window and looked up at the moon. It hadn’t peaked yet, but it was close.

“Mind-link someone. We’re going to get out of here, and we’re going to find out,” I ordered, unable to stop the hope that was clawing its way upward. Evie’s eyes glazed over for a few moments.

“They need to know where we are,” she said when they cleared.

“If we knew where we were, this wouldn’t be a problem,” I sighed. Evie’s eyes glazed over again, and after a couple of minutes, they cleared again.

“You can use your powers without Tenoch, right?” she asked.

“Yes.” After another moment mind-linking, she finally smiled.

“Uncle Lalo is going to make it rain. He wants you to make the rain swirl upward so they can find us.”

“Okay. I’m ready,” I told her, walking over to the window.

When I smelled the first drops of water hitting the ground, I raised my hand out the window as much as I could, and when I started feeling the raindrops, I began to make the water swirl. It took a while before I could get it to swirl upward high enough for it to clear the trees.

“They see it. They know where we are. You can stop now,” she said. I nodded and stopped, then stalked over to her and kissed her again, pressing her body against the wall of the cell. I would never get over how good this felt. Her soft body against mine, her lips on mine.

She could be my mate, I thought, pulling back to breathe.

“If you’re my mate, you’re going to be in so much trouble,” I growled at her.

She bit her lip again, and I groaned before I bent down to kiss her again, pulling her lower lip into my mouth and biting it lightly. She moaned, and I felt myself getting hard at the noise. I kissed down her neck, and she moved her head to give me more access with a sigh. I sucked on the skin there, attempting to mark her with desperate need, wishing it were my canines that were digging into her neck. Goddess, I wanted to make her mine.

I was breathing hard and buried my face in her neck for a moment, smelling that wonderful scent of caramel and cinnamon and imagining a life in which I was able to be surrounded by it for the rest of my life. When I lifted my head and looked into her eyes again, I felt the mate bond snap into place, sparks bursting forth from every spot where our skin touched, making both of us gasp at their sudden intensity.

They feel just like that night in Columbus, I thought as we looked at each other in awe. Her hand was shaking when she placed it on my face. Sparks spread from the point where her hand touched my face, and I leaned into it, relishing the feel of her touch.

“Mate,” she whispered with a smile, tears leaving her eyes.

“You’re my mate,” I answered back. Joy, possessiveness, and wonder filled my heart. “You’re in so much trouble,” I whispered before kissing her again. The sparks were unbelievable, and I could even feel Tenoch trying to push through the silver suppression to mark her. She moaned against me and pushed her hands into my hair, holding me in place as our tongues danced against each other.

“Well, this is a new and exciting development. Can I be there when Evergreen finds out about this? I want to see what he does.” Aunt Kassie’s voice startled us from our kiss. She, Uncle Lalo, Mom and Dad were all pushed together and peeking through the window of the cell door, smiling widely at us.

The heat came to my face, and I saw Evie’s face blush just as fiercely, but neither one of us let go of the other. Aunt Kassie opened the door with a forceful pull, and it was ripped off its hinges. Being a vampire queen and a wolf had its perks. Only an alpha came close to the strength and agility she had, and with her assassin training, most stood very little chance against her.

“Evergreen and the others are on their way. We’re just the faster ones,” Uncle Lalo explained.

“Are you guys...” Dad’s question trailed off, motioning to us with his hands. When I nodded, he blew out a breath. “How the fuck did you guys not figure this out before this?” Despite the slight annoyance in his voice, which I fully shared, he couldn’t stop smiling at us.

“Do you want to explain that, Evie?” I asked, and her blush deepened.

“It doesn’t matter how! It matters that they are,” Mom said and rushed to us. “I’m so happy you’re safe!” she cried out, pulling Evie into a hug. “And I’m so happy for you both.”

I struggled not to growl at having Evie taken away from me. I wanted to make up for all the years we could have been together. I wanted her glued to my body for the foreseeable future.

“Damn, I knew we forgot something. We left the bolt cutters with Evergreen,” Uncle Lalo said, looking at my silver cuffs.
