‘I know. I’ve just been a little emotional.’

‘Do we need a girls night?’

‘No. Yes. Fuck. Yes, please.’

‘How about tomorrow night? We can go have a drink in town and make the boys babysit?’

‘I don’t want to be a bother to them.’

“Fuck that. James is your mate and Cory needs the practice,” I blurted out loud.

“Practice for what?” Cory asked, startled to a stop, a strawberry frozen halfway to Molly’s mouth, who instantly became impatient, grabbed his hand with both of hers and brought the berry into her mouth.

“Zi needs a girls’ night. Can you and James babysit tomorrow?”

“Of course, but what do I need practice for?” he asked, his eyes narrowing on me, and I felt the heat coming to my cheeks.

“Taking care of kids,” I mumbled, grabbing a strawberry to busy myself when Zi’s eyes turned to saucers and Cory’s bright smile filled his face.

“Are you pregnant?” Zi asked.

“Who’s pregnant?” James asked, choosing that moment to walk in.

“No one! Jeez! It’s only been a week!” I said, wishing I hadn’t blurted a damn thing out loud.

“But you’re trying?” James asked with a shit-eating grin only he could muster.

“What are we trying?” Jo walked in with Meli. I groaned and banged my head against the kitchen table, making Molly giggle.

“Cory and Evie are trying to get pregnant,” Zi answered.

“We’re not trying! We’re just not... stopping it,” I said, knowing how red my face must be by the heat I could feel on my cheeks, while Cory’s face was the epitome of happiness.

“So wait, you’re talking about trying to have a baby in front of mine? What kind of perverts are you?” James hissed, taking Molly from Cory and covering her little ears. Molly’s giggle-fest forged on while Zi’s face whipped to James so fast at his words that I thought it would continue and complete a full three-hundred-and-sixty-degree exorcist turn.

“Oh my goddess, we were not! Zi wants a girls’ night so I told her you could babysit. She said she didn’t want to bother you, so I said you are her mate and Cory could practice dealing with kids!” James scoffed as he started playing with Molly’s hair.

“She’s right though, I can’t babysit.” I glared at James, and I saw Zi’s face crumble from the corner of my eye before he continued. “Molly’s mine now. Taking care of her isn’t babysitting. It’s just taking care of my pup.” Whipping my eyes to my best friend, I saw Zi’s eyes water as she turned around in an attempt to cover them while I grinned at James, winking at him. I was so fucking proud of my cousin and friend right now, because that was the absolute fucking right answer.

The conversation returned to normal after Zi made her famous salmon casserole for dinner. We started discussing how the mission in Vegas went, and I had to go through the entire repeat discussion of what my gift actually did and how it wasn’t the same as talking to computers.

“That’s a neat gift, though. Imagine all the shit you could do with it. I wish I was mated to Cory. I wonder what cool gift I would have gotten,” Jo sighed, not realizing what he said until Meli raised an eyebrow, and James started choking on his food as he began to laugh.

“I didn’t mean it like that, baby!”

“It is pretty handy though,” Cory interrupted, trying to save Jo. “Better than just being able to make a mini water tornado.”

“Manipulating elements is a really fucking awesome gift,” Zi pointed out.

“Fire, yes. Earth, sure. Wind, probably! So many uses in a fight. Water... the best I’ve been able to do is make a skating park in the middle of a road and cause a lot of sprained ankles.” I shook my head at his words.

“Water is one of the fundamental blocks of life. Being able to manipulate it is a big deal. Everything on earth requires water to live,” I countered.

“I can’t produce water though, just play with it,” Cory pointed out while making a mini tornado from his glass of water.

“Maybe you just haven’t unlocked its full potential,” I said, refusing to believe his power was useless. No one is gifted a useless power. You just have to know how to use it. Elemental gifts were so rare. Cory just didn’t have anyone to teach him the best way to use it.

We were quiet for a few minutes before James started chuckling.
