Once I was done, I returned to the conference room, where we had centralized all our meetings and had boards with maps and every piece of information we needed. James was on the computer, looking for something. Molly was sitting beside him, coloring quietly, with a plate of cookies, a cut-up banana and a toddler cup filled with milk next to her plate. If we didn’t know she wasn’t James’ biological child, one wouldn’t fucking know. You can always find them with snacks nearby so they don’t get cranky. I ruffled her hair a little when she gave me a distracted hug.

“What are you up to?” I asked James, who sighed and sat back.

“I feel fucking useless, Cory. This is the only time in my life I wish I were as tech-savvy as Evie or Zi, and I feel fucking guilty,” he admitted.

“Guilty, why?” I asked, leaning against the desk and stealing one of their cookies.

“Because Dani could have been there. If she didn’t go back to school when she did, she would have been with Vi and Tori, and all I can feel is fucking relief when I remember that.”

“That’s nothing to feel guilty about, James. You think all of us aren’t thinking the same? Dani could have been taken too, and thank fuck she wasn’t. We are all fucking relieved she made the decision to be a study-holic. Being relieved that your sister is fine doesn’t take anything away from your concern over the rest of your family.” I clapped him on the shoulder. I stood up to leave, ready to retrieve my mate from the lab and drag her back home. “Are you picking up Zi?”

“No. She’s in Evie’s office across the way. The council wanted to ask her what she wanted to do about Molly and broccoli’s pack,” James half growled, and I snorted. He was still using that name. “Technically, Molly could have a claim to the pack now that those assholes will be executed tomorrow. Zi wants nothing to do with it, of course, but there’s a shit load that they have to legally inform her before they can be satisfied with her ‘no’ and send her the paperwork to sign.” I nodded.

“I’m going to pick up, Evie,” I informed him, and he nodded as he went back to scanning his screen.

“Hew, Uncy Cowy.” Molly gave me a couple of pictures before I could leave.

“Awe, thanks, Molly. I’ll make sure to put them up in the fridge upstairs, okay?” I said and was rewarded by one of her bright smiles.

I was walking out of the pack house, when I looked at the pictures, did a one-eighty and went back to the conference room, my heart palpitating.

“Molly, can you tell me what this is?” I asked. James turned around, trying to look at what I was holding to figure out what I was talking about.

“That’s you, Auntie Evie, and baby,” she said nonchalantly, pointing to the little squiggles she had drawn in the middle of Evie’s stomach like it was obvious news.

“Di-Did you hear Auntie Evie and your mom talking about a baby?” Molly shook her head, and I felt my heart sink. I thought for a moment Evie was pregnant and hadn’t told me yet.

“The pwetty lady with the pwetty hair told me.” Molly said.

“What pretty lady?” James asked, concerned.

“The one that tawks to me,” Molly said.

“When? Molly, when does this lady talk to you?” James asked, his voice going up an octave higher than usual.

“When I’m sweeping.” I looked at James, confused.

“When you’re sweeping?” James asked.

“No. Sweeping,” Molly tried to annunciate, but it sounded the same.

“Sleeping?” James tried, and Molly nodded and continued to draw.

“A pretty lady came to you in your dreams and told you Evie was going to have a baby?”

“Yes, and Uncy Cowy needs to sthap bad woof, like you, Daddy,” she explained.

“What bad wolf?” I asked, liking this conversation even less. Molly grabbed the papers she gave me, and showed me another that made my blood run cold.

“Who’s the guy, Molly?” James asked.

“Bad woof,” Molly said and continued her drawing, seemingly done with the conversation.

‘Does she have gifts, or is this just her imagination?’ I asked James as we watched Molly continue to draw a horse.

‘Zi never mentioned anything. Maybe she’s just catching all the talk around the conference room?’ That sounded more plausible because otherwise, what the fuck. ‘I’ll ask Zi when she’s done with the council.’

‘Yeah, okay. I’ll go get Evie.’
