Evie hacked into some cameras from storefronts across the street from the casino, and grabbed a few screenshots of the men that ran it. The facial recognition software was currently scanning for them worldwide. Only if we could confirm they were far away would I be able to relax any of the measures we’d placed over the last few months.

I watched my baby sister become Luna of Blue Moon, but it was a bittersweet moment. As happy as I was for her, it reminded me of everything we’d been through over the last few months.

Aunt Kelly was dressed in black, still mourning for her son and pack. Areli had also chosen to dress in black out of respect.

Violet wasn’t here. She was refusing to leave her room and would have panic attacks at the mere suggestion of it. Mom moved her to their bedroom with the ensuite while they moved downstairs into the second master bedroom. The therapist agreed to start treating Violet with home sessions until my sister felt comfortable leaving it.

Lucien’s mate was due next month and was on bed rest, so both of them were missing from today’s ceremony at Areli’s insistence that Lucien remain with his mate. Bells’ pack wasn’t in any condition to allow her to leave.

Only Mom, Dad and I were supporting our sister tonight. Well, and our family from Guardian Moon. Adrien and Elias showed up, despite Areli letting them know it would be okay, but they insisted that Tori would have been here, so they would be here in her stead.

As the moon peaked, and I heard the howls of joy of the newly found mates, my mind returned to the words I’ve grown up hearing.

Bonds strengthen and grow. It’ll be key to fighting Tezcatlipoca.

Everything we’d overcome so far was thanks to all the bonds we’d found, nurtured and grown. If Evie hadn’t gone away and met Zi, James wouldn’t have his mate, Selene wouldn’t have warned me of Evie’s pregnancy through Molly, and Zi wouldn’t have been able to find Evie, allowing us to rescue Violet.

So then, why was Bells sent so far away? And why did I feel like I needed to bring her home? Something nagged in the back of my head. Something that felt like I’d forgotten something, but the need to have her near and protect her now that her mate had passed away was growing until it was an ache in my chest I couldn’t get rid of.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Evie

I was pacing in our room a couple of weeks later. Cory said my scent was different this morning. There would be no hiding the pregnancy anymore, so once Cory finished changing, we were calling the person we decided should know first.

“Cory? Is everything alright?” Bells answered right away, the worry and panic evident in her voice.

“Hey, Bells. Everything is fine. I just wanted to chat with you if you have a moment?” Cory answered, guilt flashing through his face momentarily at making her worry.

“Of course, but why are you calling me? Why not mind-link me like usual?”

“Oh, because I have Evie here with me. We wanted to talk to you together.”

“Oh... Hi, Evie!”

“Hi, Bells,” I answered nervously.

“So wh—” Bells stopped abruptly with whatever she wanted to say, and I leaned forward worriedly.

“Is everything okay? Are you still there?” I asked when she was quiet for a moment. Cory pushed the phone away from us when an excited squeal burst through the speakerphone.

“Please fucking tell me you’re calling me for what I think you’re calling me. Please, please, please, please!” Bells begged loudly.

“If you would tell me what you think we’re calling you for, I would be happy to confirm or deny once my ears stop ringing,” Cory explained, his smile wide as he squeezed my hand in excitement.

“You’re making me an auntie, aren’t you? Please tell me you are!”

“Aren’t you already an auntie? Cecilia is going to pop at any second,” I reminded her, teasing her.

“You know what I mean!” Bells growled playfully.

“No. We don’t. What do you mean, Bells?” Cory continued to torture his twin.

“Cory Alexander, I’m your twin. Stop fucking with me, and please tell me you finally knocked up your mate! I told you I wanted her knocked up ages ago when I visited so I could spoil her rotten.”

“I’m not a miracle worker, Bells. It only took six weeks. Give me some credit.” Cory slapped a hand to his mouth and groaned, but Bells only squealed again.

“I knew it! I fucking knew it! I can’t wait. When are you due? When’s the baby shower? I need to go find some gifts. Is it a boy or a girl? I already sent everything I bought to Lucien so I’ll need to look for more stuff! I’m going spoil that pup rotten! I’m goi—”
