‘Cory. Helios is home. Can you meet us at his pack? Grab Evie. She should be there too,’ Dad’s mind-link came through.

‘I’m just checking the perimeter. I’ll be there in twenty, Dad.’

‘Evie, please be ready in fifteen minutes. We’re meeting Uncle Helios to figure things out.’ I flipped the mind-link.

‘Okay. I’ll be ready.’

I arrived in wolf form at the door of the new building. The plan had been to shift and walk over, but I was surprised to find Evie’s wolf, Tozi, waiting for us there, a bag with her clothes in her mouth.

Behave, I warned Tenoch when I felt how happy and excited he was to see her. He grumbled but obeyed, and instead, they sniffed each other happily.

‘Ready when you are,’ Evie reached out.

‘Let’s go then,’ I said, and we took off toward Guardian Moon.

Tozi and Tenoch ran, merrily playing with each other on the way. They only met a few times before, but it felt like they were the best of friends.

Adrien was waiting for us there with robes. We both had our clothes in our mouths, so we just snagged them from him, tossed them on and went inside to the bathrooms to change.

“Evie!” Aunt Nat greeted cheerfully when we entered the conference room. “I haven’t seen you in forever. How have you been?”

“Raising hell, as usual, Luna,” Evie giggled into the hug.

“Luna? What happened to Tia Nat and Tio Helios(Aunt and Uncle)?” Aunt Nat pouted, making Evie blush.

“I didn’t want to assume I could still call you that,” she answered quietly.

“Nonsense. We’ve all changed your diapers. We’re aunts and uncles as long as we live, and we live a long time.” Uncle Helios came over and embraced her too. The interaction reminded me that I wasn’t the only one who’d missed her. She was loved by so many, and it made me wonder again what had caused her to distance herself from all of us.

“Let’s get to business, shall we?” Uncle Helios asked everyone once we’d greeted each other.

Chapter Nine

Evie

Guilt was eating me alive. Did I really abandon all these people who cared about me for so long? Everyone was acting like they hadn’t seen me in years, even though I’d been coming home for some of the school breaks and during holidays.

We kind of always spent it at home, Tozi reminded me.

Right. I stayed home studying or working on projects with Dad.

‘Are you okay, Evie?’ Luna Celeste asked.

‘Yes Luna,’ I answered. ‘I’m perfectly fine.’

‘It’s just Celeste now, sweetie. You should come over for dinner one night. We have a lot to catch up on. Bring your friend Ziomara. Cory told us a little bit about her, and she sounds lovely.’

‘That would be great. I’ll ask her and let you know,’ I answered. She smiled brightly while we sat down around the conference table, and I saw Alpha Markus mind-linking with her. When they were done, he turned and smiled at me as well.

“Let’s get to business, shall we?” Uncle Helios started. “Can you guys bring us up to date on everything that’s been going on? I know some of what happened, but we’ve been traveling for so long that we only managed to get service here and there.” Cory sighed beside us, and I knew it still hurt him to talk about it. Thankfully, Uncle Lalo spoke up instead.

“They knew when we would be at our most vulnerable, Helios. They attacked when the moon peaked. The moment everyone was watching mates find each other. There were five SUVs ‌with machine guns loaded with silver bullets. The rest of the men had either assault rifles with silver bullets or shotguns loaded with silver shavings and wolfsbane mixed into the birdshot,” he explained. “If it wasn’t for Cory taking down three of the machine guns himself, the death toll would have been so much higher.”

“You took down the other two, uncle,” Cory reminded him.

“My past life and being mated to Kassie gives me more tolerance to the silver, Cory. I didn’t even get shot, though. You did, and you kept going. I only grabbed that first one because your guy crashed into them, distracting him,” Uncle Lalo explained.

“You got shot?” Both Luna Celeste and I asked at the same time.
