“It was just on the shoulder.” He shrugged. I watched Luna Celeste do what I wanted to do. She stood and went to check on his shoulder. Cory blushed, but let his mother do what she needed to reassure herself, pulling his shirt open until she had a good view of his shoulder. I did my best to peek without being noticed, and my heart sank when I saw the small scar that only silver could leave on a werewolf. It was in the shape of a hole in his right shoulder.

“Mom...” Cory continued to blush adorably after a minute of Luna Celeste examining his front and back. “It was just a small wound. It went right through, so it didn’t do a lot of damage. It even healed on its own,” he complained. “We have a lot of stuff to get through,” he whispered to her.

“This is your own fault for not telling me,” she said, finally satisfied, and returned to her seat, where she snuggled into Alpha Markus for comfort. For the first time in a long time, I envied someone that connection with their mate. I looked over at Cory, who was red-faced and avoiding looking everyone in the face. Thankfully for him, Uncle Lalo continued.

“Like I said, it was getting those machine guns that allowed us to save as many as we did. Cory also made sure that the hospital staff was sent over right away, and that helped all the medical staff at Blue Moon.” He nodded toward Cory again. That was right. Mom told me they had called her to come help. Crescent Moon and Guardian Moon shared hospital staff since Guardian Moon was still growing and didn’t need dedicated medical staff.

Aunt Nat was a white wolf and Luna of Guardian Moon. She had healing powers, so most of the serious cases, even from Crescent Moon usually came to her for help. It was terrible luck that she was away when they ambushed us. She could have helped so many.

But was it? Tozi asked.

Was it what? I asked.

Was it bad luck that Aunt Nat was away? Maybe they knew she was gone, and that’s why they chose that time to attack, she said. My heart sank, could they really know the movements of everyone here enough to plan an attack that well?

“How many are still being treated?” Nat asked.

“Just one,” Cory whispered, sadness saturating his voice.

“Yes, and I need you to rest before you go help, Nat. The damage is intensive, and I don’t want you to collapse after,” Celeste said. I could tell this was hard for her. On the one hand, this was her baby girl. On the other, Aunt Nat’s healing powers drained her and left her vulnerable.

“Who is it?” Aunt Nat asked.

“It’s Areli,” Alpha Markus answered, his voice pained. “The bullets nicked her heart, and there’s a piece they haven’t been able to retrieve. They found it in an ultrasound this morning after being concerned that she was healing so slowly, despite confirming her wolf was alive. My little girl is in a chemically induced coma,” he finished, his voice breaking at the end.

“We’re hoping you will be able to help before they try to go in and remove it,” Luna Celeste finished.

“I don’t need to rest, Celeste. I need to go right now.” Aunt Nat stood up.

“No, Nat. You’ve been traveling for over twenty-four hours. We need to have this meeting, and you need to rest and eat a lot of carbs. Then we will go help my little girl. She won’t be happy if you collapse after healing her. You know how she’s always worried when you sleep for days because you overuse your gift.”

“But Celeste...” Aunt Nat said, tears in her eyes.

“She’s alive, and she’ll be well because of you. I know this, and as much as it hurts me to think about her in that bed, I need you strong. Everything that happened...it feels like it’s just the beginning. We can’t risk you being out of commission for so long,” Luna Celeste explained, but couldn’t stop the tears from gathering and falling from her face.

“She’s right, Mi Mida,” (My Life) Uncle Helios said, pulling her back to sit. Aunt Nat finally nodded and sighed, trying to blink away her tears.

“Where are we on the phones? You said you had about a dozen?” Uncle Helios continued, but he huddled closer to Aunt Nat by instinct, giving her comfort.

“Yes! Evie has a plan in place to figure out how to get them. We’ll be heading out to Columbus in three days’ time to test out a theory,” Cory explained.

“Wait, why weren’t we told this?” Uncle Lalo asked, looking at us worriedly.

“She only just got the information today. The plan was made this morning,” Cory answered, then smirked. “We’re not trying to leave you old folks in the dark here, Uncle. You’re getting the information as we find it.”

“Old my ass,” he gruffed, making me hold back a giggle.

“And everything else about you,” Uncle Theo teased, making everyone laugh.

“Where’s Aunt Kassie?” I asked, suddenly wondering why Uncle Lalo was here alone. Those two were inseparable. I didn’t know the whole story, but I knew they were once apart for so long that they couldn’t bear to spend more than a day away from each other now.

“Visiting her sister. She’s back tomorrow with Kaia and Ellie. She asked me to stay here so she could talk to her sister alone.”

“Is Karissa still not wanting anything to do with the crown duties?” Luna Celeste asked. Aunt Kassie was the Vampire Queen. Well, in name only as far as I remember. She made a council so they would take over and she only intervened in extreme circumstances.

“No. She wants nothing to do with it, but Kassie is tired of the vampire council constantly bitching at her. She needs someone to take over the administrative parts of it. She’s never had the patience for bullshit,” he chuckled. Aunt Kassie was a no-nonsense type of woman. “She thinks the girls will help bring her home.”

“She does have a soft spot for them,” Uncle Theo answered.
