After dinner, I sat with Molly while Zi and Luna Celeste walked over to a small office to the side.

“It’s good to have you back home, Evie. You’ve been missed.” Alpha Markus said, making me blush. Molly was thankfully falling asleep in my arms, so I had somewhere to look.

“I like being home again, Alpha Markus. This is where I belong,” I said, feeling a warmth inside me as I said the words out loud.

“I’m glad to hear that,” Alpha Markus said warmly. Cory was looking at me from the other side of the couch, and I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. He’d been quiet for a lot of the night too, only adding things here and there.

“I think Molly and Zi really like it here too,” I said when there was nothing but silence.

“We’re going to make sure they are safe here. They seem like amazing people. Celeste will make sure they have all the support they need.” Alpha Markus nodded.

“I know. That’s why I convinced her to come,” I said, feeling that same surge of pride at how accepting our pack was. “I knew Crescent Moon would welcome her with open arms and give her the safety and love she deserves.”

“We won’t let her down,” Cory said, and I could see the pride in him as well.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize Molly was sleepy. I wouldn’t have kept you so long.” Luna Celeste appeared with Zi. Zi looked a little sniffly, and her eyes were red-rimmed, but she looked happy.

“That’s okay. We’re only a few streets from here,” Zi said.

I stood up with Molly in my arms. Luna Celeste smiled at me with a twinkle in her eyes, and I grew confused.

“Oh, Evie, you’re going to be such a great mother someday. I can just see it now,” she said.

“Like... you see it, or you see it, Tuli?” Alpha Markus asked. Luna Celeste gave him a smirk but didn’t clarify.

“Well, we’ll get going. Thank you for having us for dinner,” I said awkwardly when she didn’t answer him.

“Nonsense. You’re welcome here anytime. I want to see you often. You were gone too long,” she said, caressing Molly’s locks away from her face. She gave me an awkward hug from the side, and when she pulled back, her eyes were black.

‘Oh, you felt it all didn’t you, darling? It is a gift and a burden,’ Kara whispered quietly before they turned back to their beautiful blue and Luna Celeste turned back to the rest as if nothing had happened. I stared after her, wanting to ask what that even meant when Zi interrupted my intentions.

“I can take her, Evie,” Zi motioned to Molly. I shook my head.

“I’m okay. It’s only a few blocks. I don’t want to wake her,” I countered.

“I’ll walk with you guys. It’s on the way to the pack house anyway,” Cory said, giving his mom a kiss on her forehead and opening the door for us.

“Was she able to help you?” I asked Zi as we walked toward our place.

“I think so. She said she has to look into a few things, but she assured me Cory would never let them take Molly away,” she answered, looking sideways at where Cory was walking.

“She’s right. I would wage war before letting Molly be taken by people like that. As it is, I wish I could report them to the council, but with how long it’s been, it’s a she-said-he-said situation at this point, and would only call his attention back to you and Molly.”

“I don’t want anything done, Alpha. I just want to live my life away from him. I can’t even regret what happened anymore, only how it happened. Molly is my world,” she said, looking at her in my arms. Cory stopped at the footsteps of our home.

“If he ever finds you, we’ll do whatever it to make sure he doesn’t get his hands on you or Molly. I promise you this,” he vowed.

“I will hold you to it, Alpha Cory.”

“I hope you do. I’ll let you get inside. I’ll see you both tomorrow,” he said.

“Wait!” Zi said, suddenly making both of us stop. “I need to see you in the morning so that we can go over the tech you’ll be taking with you to the Columbus meet.”

“Just link me, and I’ll be there. Good night ladies.” He nodded at us and left.

I walked inside the house and put Molly in her crib. I walked back to the kitchen and found Zi already pulling a bottle of wine out of the cabinet.

“That bad?” I asked.
