“No. Just... draining. She asked some hard questions.” She sighed.

“Do you want to talk about it?” I asked, taking the glass she gave me before she took a drink right out of the bottle.

“No. It’s nothing you haven’t heard before,” she said.

“And what did she say?”

“She suggested I don’t leave the pack,” she answered with a smirk.

“Pack grounds?” I asked, surprised.

“No. I mean she suggested I make this or Guardian Moon my permanent home, even if I ever decide not to work for Crescent Moon or meet my mate in another pack. She said as long as I’m here, everyone will protect me. Another pack might give up my child out of fear of starting a war,” she explained.

“You told her names then?” I asked. She nodded, taking another swig.

“Yes. I thought it was only fair. Alpha Cory never asked me about it.”

“Cory knows you’ll tell him when you’re ready. He also wouldn’t care which pack it was. If there’s an injustice, he’ll take on whatever pack is necessary. Just as his dad did to save Luna Celeste’s pack members.”

“You weren’t kidding when you said that this place was unique,” she said, making me grin.

“I don’t want to say I told you so...” I tipped my glass to hers. “By the way, what did you find for Cory to use?”

“Nothing. I made one.” She winked and finished the bottle. “I’m going to turn in. We have a lot to go over tomorrow before you guys get ready to leave.”

“Night,” I said, finishing my drink and heading to bed.

Chapter Ten

Cory

“Alright, Alpha. I couldn’t find anything that these guys aren’t likely to detect technology-wise, so I got a little creative,” Zi told me while she motioned me over to one of the tables in her lab.

“There’s zero indication that these guys are anything but human, so I’m assuming there is no need for two-way communication outside of mind-linking,” she said. I nodded, the small amount of information Evergreen had dug up on his own said the same thing.

“So from what Evie’s told me, your issue is that you want to be able to hear everything going on, just in case something happens and she needs help?” she asked, and I nodded again.

“There’s nothing that we have or can get in such a short time that won’t be picked up by sensors, but there’s this.” She finally pointed to a pair of earrings and a Bluetooth speaker.

“She needs to wear these, and you need to be touching this.” She pointed to the earrings and speaker, respectively.

“That’s it?” I asked. It seemed like a simple thing that didn’t really require me to be here for an explanation.

“Once you’re there, yes. But before you leave, I need to sync you together.”

“What do you mean ‘sync us together’?”

“There’s no technology at our disposal that we can use, so I’ve created a spell to link you both together for the next few days.”

“A spell?” I raised an eyebrow skeptically.

“Yes. Consider me a two-for-one special. I can code, and I can cast a spell, Alpha Cory.” She grinned at me.

“How does it work?”

“Well, I have to connect both of you and the items together. It’s a simple spell, but I do have to warn you that it may have a few side effects.” She bit her lip.

“What’s that?” I asked. Her eyes glazed over momentarily, and Evie walked into the room shortly after.
