“So you are in love with her, then. I thought as much after your reaction to Paolo. Why didn’t you ever say anything to us?”

“Because I wasn’t ready to admit anything. Even to myself. I kept telling myself it was just a normal over-protectiveness toward a friend. I shouldn’t feel like this, Jo. She’s not my mate. She’s our friend,” I said miserably, the words feeling like bile in my mouth.

“So what are you going to do?” he asked.

“I’m going to go make sure she’s safe. Tenoch knows to keep his thoughts to himself. We’ve been good so far. What’s this spell going to make me feel that I don’t already feel?”

“I meant about your feelings for Evie. She would make an amazing Luna,” he explained.

“There’s nothing to do, Jo. She’s not my mate, and I would be a bastard to take hers away from her because I developed feelings.”

“You and James should go look for your mates again.” He sighed.

“Yeah, I’ll talk to him later about it. Although if we’re being honest, something is going on with him and Zi. I’m going to wait to see if they’re mates on the next full moon before I approach him. He’s smitten with her and it’s different from all the other times he’s gone after a girl,” I answered.

“I know. I’ve seen it,” Jo answered with a small smile. After a few minutes of silence, he asked, “Are you going to be okay?”

“Always.” I faked a smile. I could tell he didn’t believe me, but he nodded and left me to continue my work. I barely got through my to-do list, and I had James go with the only group of employees that came in today.

I went to bed early, not bothering with dinner. The next few days were going to be long and exhausting. I would need to keep my feelings under a tight lid.

The next morning I showed up at Evie’s. My nerves felt frayed already and Tenoch was pacing anxiously in my head.

“Good morning,” Zi answered the door. She looked at me sympathetically and I guess she could sense the nerves I was feeling. She patted my shoulder as I walked in and I wanted to cringe. I needed to be better at keeping my face blank.

“Morning,” I answered.

“I’ve got it all ready to set up in Evie’s bedroom. We’re just trying to figure out how to get Molly to nap long enough to get this done.” She sighed.

“Why don’t I just call James over to watch her? He said they got along?” I volunteered.

“Oh...umm. Sure. If he doesn’t mind,” she said.

“I’ll call him over,” I said and she smiled.

“I’ll go get everything ready then,” she said, leaving me with Evie and Molly at the kitchen table.

“Morning, Evie. Morning, Molly,” I said, avoiding looking at Evie in the eye, hoping she couldn’t see my nerves.

‘James. Come watch Molly while we do this spell,’ I mind-linked.

‘Oooh, Miss Molly needs a friend? I’ll be right over.’ He didn’t even complain about having to babysit. Anyone who knew him would probably think he was under a spell if they heard him. He had always been a little lazy, asking if someone else was available first and now he was chomping at the bit to help.

Molly was talking to Evie, but I couldn’t understand much of what she was saying. Evie seemed to though, because she was answering back.

‘She wants to know if you want a pancake.’ Evie interrupted my train of thought. I looked over at Molly and she was holding up a piece of syrupy pancake.

“Thank you!” I said and took the little piece of breakfast offered. “It’s delicious!” I gave her a thumbs up after munching on the bready gift.

Molly looked quite pleased with herself. Shortly after there was a knock on the door and Evie went to answer, leaving Molly to continue to feed me pieces of her pancake. James walked in with some strawberries and an excited look on his face.

“Good morning, Miss Molly! I brought my favorite snack. Are you ready to watch some cartoons?” he asked. I watched Molly’s eyes light up and start struggling out of her chair. Evie laughed and cleaned her hands before letting her down. Zi came back out, and she watched James and Molly already sitting on the couch with the TV on, sharing the container of strawberries with an odd expression that resembled helplessness before she turned to look at us.

“Ready?” she asked.

“As ready as I’ll be,” I said, half laughing.

“Do you guys need anything?” Zi asked James.
