Let it guide you. Let it bind you.

Let it keep you two together.”

I felt a sudden warmth run through my body. The flames shot up on the candles and the crushed herbs swirled around us a few times before everything died down again.

“Did it work?” Evie asked.

“Only one way to find out,” Zi answered, grabbing the earrings and speaker. She wrapped the speaker in a cloth before she gave it to me. “Alpha, go to the kitchen and let me know if you can hear the conversation between Evie and myself.”

I walked out to the kitchen. I uncovered the speaker and set it on the counter. I held my breath and touched it.

“—make sure you packed the black dress?”

“I told you, I just packed a pair of jeans and a shirt.”

“Evie, it’s a party, a certain dress code is required, even with nerds.”

I chuckled.

‘It works,’ I mind-linked both of them.

“Excellent. We’ll meet you at the pack house in a few minutes, Alpha. It appears I need to repack for this woman,” she said, coming into the kitchen.

“Zi...” Evie whined.

“Zi nothing. Let’s go,” she said.

“James, do you mind just keeping an eye on Molly for a few more minutes?” Zi asked and then shook her head with a smile when James simply waved her away, fully into whatever cartoon they were watching.

“Looks to me like you’ve found a dedicated babysitter.” I laughed and left with the speaker once again wrapped in the cloth. I packed it carefully in my bag and headed down to the front of the pack house where my truck was already waiting.

“James, make sure we switch the patrol schedules correctly and the training assessments are coming up. You have to make sure we’re ready when we come back and Jo...”

“Will you just go? You’re gone for two days. We have this. All the safety measures are in place, and we know our duties, Alpha. Go get the info we need to get those bastards,” Jo said. I sighed.

“I know. I’m...”

‘Anxious about being alone with Evie?’ He switched to mind-link. I looked over to where Evie was being hugged by Mom and nodded.

‘How does it feel when you look at her after the spell? Is it worse?’

‘No. I don’t feel different,’ I answered. Of course, I was already in love with her, simple attraction was not going to add anything to what I was feeling for her. It did make me wonder if she could feel anything for me right now, though.

Mom came over and hugged me, telling me to be safe and to let her know how things went. I wanted to ask her about the protection spell on the bracelet, but there was no time, so I shelved it for another time. We put everything in my truck and headed to Phoenix to catch the jet.

Evie was pretty quiet on our drive, but I imagined it was just nerves from the meet tonight. We got on the plane and let silence engulf us. The stewardess came around to give us some drinks and we both ordered water. I was still lost in thought when Evie finally broke our silence.

“Nervous?” she asked.

“Worried. We have a lot of unanswered questions that could be resolved with this,” I replied. “You?”

“Anxious, but not as much as you,” she said.

“Pretty cocky of you to assume that,” I teased. She smirked and pointed down. I followed her finger down to my cup. The water was hovering over my glass and splashed back into the cup the moment I looked at it, a few drops splattering over my lap. I blushed.

“It happens sometimes when I’m thinking,” I explained.

“It’s a lot more control than what you had back in the day,” she pointed out.
