‘I told you to use one of the other ones,’ Tozi giggled, and Tenoch’s tail was going a mile a minute at the sound.

‘I’m not letting him know just how much code we know. This one is the one we made at thirteen. Our code was still crude. It will make him think he’s smarter than us,’ Evie explained.

‘If we can’t crack his code, doesn’t that make him smarter?’ Tenoch asked only for Tozi to growl and Tenoch to whimper at the reaction.

‘We can crack it. We’re trying to save time and get answers before anyone gets hurt,’ she growled indignantly.

‘Can you guys pipe down so I can hear what Evie’s saying?’ I growled. It was hard having a conversation in my head and listening to Evie’s conversation coming out of the speaker, but then added, ‘Sorry Tozi,’ when I heard her whimper at my tone.

“So, can you get me what I need?” I finally heard Evie clearly.

“Of course I can, but it’s going to cost you, beauty,” the man said. I wasn’t at all happy about how he kept flirting with her and using pet names.

“I have money. I need this today. Can you do that?” Evie answered, ignoring the man’s compliments.

“There’s going to be a rush fee. What do you need this kind of tech for, anyway?”

"Personal reasons. What’s the price?” she asked.

“Thirty-five thousand and have a drink with me,” he said.

“I’ll take two, and I can buy my own drink. How long until you can give them to me?”

“Give me forty minutes. Don’t move from here, gorgeous,” he answered.

“Wouldn’t dream of it,” Evie said and gagged through the mind-link.

‘You guys should see this guy. He doesn’t even look like a nerd, he looks like a sleazy half-cocked hacker,’ Evie said.

‘Be careful,’ I warned.

‘Pay attention to your surroundings,’ Tenoch added.

“Another rum and coke please,” Evie asked.

‘I just want the phones and to be out of here,’ Evie sighed.

‘I’m right here. Whatever you need,’ I told her.

‘I know. I know. I’ll get this done, Cory. I won’t let you down,’ she responded.

‘Evie, you could never let me down. I just need you safe. If we have to do this the long way, we do it the long way. We have safety measures in place. We’ll be fine. The moment you feel you’re in danger, you get out of there,’ I told her. I needed her to understand that while it would be a little disappointing, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, so she didn’t need to take unnecessary risks.

‘I know. I know you’ll keep me safe,’ she answered, a little softer.

‘Always,’ Tenoch growled out the promise with conviction.

“Hey, sweetheart. I got your phones. You want to have that drink now?” The same sleazy voice from before came out of the speaker half an hour later.

“You have my phones?” Evie asked.

“Yes, but let’s have that drink first, and then we’ll get them synced to your biometrics. What will you take?” The man asked.

“Rum and Coke,” Evie finally relented.

‘Are you sure Evie?’ I asked.

‘Yeah, just want to get this over with.’
