“I can’t believe you guys did illegal things at such a young age. I never would have thought it by how serious you guys all are,” Meli said when she finished laughing.

“Well, it was mostly harmless stuff. We never did anything really serious,” Jo said, his face blushing.

“And we never got caught.” I winked.

“I mean, if your dad didn’t want us doing stuff like this, he shouldn’t have taught you to code from such an early age,” Jo said.

“He didn’t,” I mentioned.

“What?”

“He didn’t teach me to code. At least not initially, but he used to work on coding a lot when he looked after me. I learned a few tricks here and there until he caught me trying to work on my own code, and started teaching me the proper way to do it. It was that birthday card I made the twins, remember?”

“The video one that had all of those things popping up?” Jo asked. I nodded, grabbing an apple from the bowl of fruit that I put out for everyone to munch on during the movies. Molly went to bed about an hour ago, so it was just the three of us talking.

“You like apples a lot,” Mel mentioned. I nodded, taking a bite out of it.

“Evie’s always liked them. There was a time when she wouldn’t eat any other fruit except apples. Everywhere she went, she always carried her little bag of apples in case whoever was watching us didn’t have any,” he told her, smiling at the memory.

“I’m a girl of simple tastes.” I shrugged. I watched the two suddenly mind-linking, but before I could ask what was happening, I heard steps outside. We all turned toward the noise and slowly began to tiptoe, trying to get a sneak peek out of the window. All we could see was James’ back, though.

‘Are they kissing?’ Meli asked us both via mind-link. She was behind me, with Jo looking over both of our heads.

‘I can’t tell. Can you hear anything?’ I asked back.

‘No,’ Jo answered.

The door opened, and the three of us jumped, trying to act like we weren’t just caught looking out the windows. Zi shook her head at us with a small smile.

“Good night,” she sang as she went to her bedroom.

“Wait, that’s it? We won’t get any details?” I called after her. She only laughed before she closed the door, and Jo went to the front door and looked outside.

“Fuck. James is gone. Let’s go find him,” he said.

“Wait, I’ll come with you,” I said, looking for my shoes. I quickly put them on and headed out to find James, but met Paolo down the block while we were trying to guess if the date had gone well or not.

“Hey, I was coming to talk to you.” Paolo waved.

“We’ll catch you later, Evie,” Jo said, nodding at Paolo, grabbing Meli’s hand and pulling her with hurried excited steps. I tried to smile at Paolo, but I knew it came out a little forced.

“I’m sorry, was I interrupting something?”

“No. We were just going to tease James,” I mentioned. We walked over to a little park and sat on the bench.

“How are you? I haven’t heard from you in a week,” he said.

“I’m okay. Just a lot going on,” I answered.

“Want to talk about it?” he asked, but I shook my head.

“My work is NDA,” I reminded him.

“Does it have to do with the attacks lately?” he asked.

“I can’t talk about it, Paolo, but how have you been? Guardian Moon getting attacked too?”

“Not so much, but we’re all on high alert, and with the future Alpha missing, things are tense everywhere.”
