“Your brother is close to graduating with his medical degree?” he asked.

“He’s got about two years before his residency.”

“He was really good during the last full moon,” he mentioned.

“Were you there? When it happened?” I asked.

"Yeah, never hurts to check to see if your mate is there, right? But to be honest, I mostly go through the motions now. I don’t think there’s a mate for me out there. Even Jasper is slowly giving up,” he said, and I could see he was genuinely sad about it.

“I’m sure she’s out there, Paolo. Have you thought about doing a circuit through packs?”

“I did a few years ago,” he answered.

“Why not try again?”

“Because I want you, Evie,” he said, taking my hand. Thankfully, our food came at that moment, and I had an excuse to pull it back.

We talked about a few other lighter subjects. It wasn’t an unpleasant evening, but knowing what he wanted from me at the end of it put a damper on the experience for me. Paolo was a good man, and any woman would be lucky to be mated to him. He was good-looking, took care of his mom, and he was a warrior that could provide for and protect his mate. He just wasn’t for me, and I knew I would just end up hurting him if I tried to force it. We sat down on the steps of the house at the end of the night, and he sighed.

“I didn’t convince you, did I?” He asked.

“There was nothing to convince Paolo,” I tried to tell him as kindly as I could. “What we had in High School…it was nice, but we were kids. I was fourteen. You were an amazing first boyfriend, and I cherish all the memories we made and everything we shared, but I only want friendship from you now.” I looked up at the moon. It would be full in a little over a week’s time. “We both need to look for our mates or the person that will make us happy. I know whoever she is will be lucky to have you. I would be lucky to have you, but we were not meant to be in this lifetime. I’m really sorry.”

He sighed.

“You can’t blame a guy for trying. You’re an amazing catch, Evie,” he said, then stood up. “Give me a bit, yeah? I need to get over you, but then friends?” he said, sticking his hand out to me. I stood and took it, but he surprised me by pulling me into a hug.

“Friends,” I said when I pulled back. “Good night, Paolo,” I said and went into the house. It was Zi’s turn to jump from the window, and I couldn’t help laughing.

“Well?” she asked.

“It ended how I thought it would end,” I told her. “He’s not for me.”

“He take it well?”

“Of course. He’s a good guy, Zi. I told you,” I said, and it was directed at my wolf too. Tozi simply swished her tail in annoyance and turned her back on me. “How was the movie?”

“Goddess, I didn’t realize James was a bit clueless. I had to explain the finer details of the movie. If Molly hadn’t fallen asleep, she’d probably explain it to him instead,” Zi laughed, but I could hear the affection in her voice.

“I told you, he’s plenty weird but adorably so,” I laughed. “I’m going to bed. I’ll catch you in the morning.”

I showered and got ready for bed, but I couldn’t fall asleep. Sometime around midnight, I gave up.

‘Are you awake?’ I mind-linked Cory.

‘I am,’ Cory answered after a few moments of silence. ‘How was your date?’

‘It was... okay. He’s a good guy, just not for me.’

‘Oh?’

‘I’m sorry I missed movie night. I do hope you guys do it again next week. I didn’t mean to ditch you,’ I said, hoping he believed me.

‘It’s okay. We let Molly pick the movie, so I’m sure you’ve already seen Zootopia plenty of times.’

‘Wait, that’s the movie Zi had to explain to James?’ I laughed.

‘Evie, I had to bite the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing,’ he chuckled.
