‘I would have died laughing.’

‘If I didn’t know he was actually smart, I would have been wondering how the hell I named him Gamma. He almost cried, thinking Nick had killed Judy.’

‘But you clearly see the blueberries before the whole thing, and what kind of Disney movie would kill the main character?’

‘The ones in James’ imagination, clearly,’ he chuckled. ‘At least he managed to have a good date, and get Zi to agree to another before she found out he is both a little slow and cries to Disney movies.

‘I hope they are mates,’ I blurted. I wish we were, I thought.

‘Me too…’ he said, and I momentarily panicked that I had said my thoughts through the mind-link before I realized he was talking about Zi and James.

‘Good night, Cory. Thanks for the chat.’

‘Always. See you in the morning, Evie,’ he said.

Chapter Fourteen

Cory

Uncle Theo

Xochil just called. She’ll be home in twenty minutes.

I read the text message twice before I bolted from my desk, mind-linking Jo and James on my way out. I tried to link Evie, but it didn’t connect. She was working on figuring out her code so I didn’t push it. She was pretty frustrated about it so I was trying to give her a little bit of space to do her review in peace.

I ran, instead of shifting, and ran into Jo, Mel, and James on the way. We got to the Guardian Moon pack house a little while later and to my annoyance, Mom and Dad showed up right next to me. Dad had used his gift and jumped from the gates at the bridge to the pack house.

“Show off,” I grumbled without any real anger behind it.

“Efficient,” Dad laughed and put Mom down with a kiss.

Everyone from Guardian Moon was already waiting for Xochil at the pack house. I could see the relief in Aunt Nat and Uncle Helios and even in my little cousins.

“Did she say where she’d been?” I asked.

“No. Just that she would explain everything when she got here,” Uncle Helios answered.

We waited a good fifteen minutes before we saw a car approaching the pack house. Something about the car looked familiar, and it wasn’t until it got closer that I recognized it.

“Is that Evie’s new car?” I asked out loud to no one in particular.

“Holy shit. It is! Did you know she was picking her up?” James asked.

“No. I thought she was at work.” I frowned.

“She’s her father’s daughter. Don’t expect to always know until the end,” Aunt Kassie chuckled, snuggling up to Uncle Lalo with a knowing smile while Evergreen puffed out like a peacock.

We waited until the car came to a stop, and Xochil exited the car before we swarmed her. I let Uncle Helios and Aunt Nat have their time with my cousin and walked over to the other side of the car.

“Forget to mention something?” I asked, trying to sound amused, but a small bit of hurt slipped through my voice.

“Sorry, I was frustrated with the code and decided to try to look around some places to see if I could find her. I’ve been worried, and I couldn’t concentrate not knowing if she was alright,” she quietly said.

“As your employer, I don’t need to know what you do with your time. Especially considering you found her,” I said. “As your friend, I thought you trusted me more than this.”

“Cory...”

“It’s okay. I’m glad she’s home safe,” I said, unsure of what else to do to show her I was in her corner and that I wished my position in her life was strong enough for her to talk to me. Some days I felt we were there, and other times, I felt like I was a complete stranger in her life.
