What right did they have to shut us out? Turn us away? Reject us?

Squeaking alerted him that the librarian was returning.

He snapped the book shut and jammed it back into its slot on the shelf.

Two other titles caught Sten’s attention. ‘The History of Kasa Kargassa’ and ‘King Richmund Kargassa: An autobiography.’

He snatched both books from the shelf, flipping through the pages.

When had Kargassa written an autobiography? Who wrote a history of their lair? Am I in these?

As far as he could tell, they didn’t mention any dragon by name other than Kargassa himself and his forebears, establishing the dynasty.

Sten and Eamerson played crucial roles in many of his listed achievements, yet they weren’t even mentioned by name.

The squeaking stopped nearby, drawing his attention.

Sten swallowed a groan as the librarian pushed a cart loaded with large tomes. He’d been hoping for a few primers.

“Thank you so much, Sam. Depending on how long I stay, I may be back,” Marli said with far too much cheer as she took over the steerage of the cart, which was piled almost as high as she was tall.

“King’s guests are always welcome.” His gaze roamed over Marli’s face, expression flat.

“Stenlen. Door.”

Sten grit his teeth and strode forward, glancing at the visible titles as he passed by.

He grunted, throwing the books he’d found onto the pile as they moved into the elevator.

Lost in thought, he ignored the tempting scent of the female next to him in the confines of the elevator.

He’d served Kargassa for most of his adult life, and he couldn’t even mention him by name in his book.

It was no secret the man was self-centered, but Sten hadn’t even considered the possibility that his regard for anyone that served him to be so low that he wouldn’t even afford them the respect of recognition for their loyal achievements toward the successes of their tribe.

The edges of his disillusionment with his former king frayed a little more at the edges.

First, his ruthless attitude toward the females, and now this blatant disrespect for his tribe.

Belatedly, he recalled that Jori’s suggestion and broached the subject.

“I’ll find my room later,” she said.

The elevator doors slid open.

Disheartened by the new revelation he’d discovered in the book, he trailed behind Marli as she steered the cart toward the new council room.

Council room.
