“Yes, you do.” He leans his face closer to mine.

“LET GO,” I hiss through gritted teeth, hating his icy eyes.

But he doesn’t let up. He has me trapped in such a way that I can’t even move my legs to try and kick him away.

“Tell me you want me too…” he whispers quietly.

I look from side to side at the empty hallway. Surely, if I yell, someone will hear me from their room, right? But my door is so close by. He could easily drag me inside in an instant. My blood runs cold at the thought.

“Admit it to yourself. Just give in…”

My heart is racing in the severest way, and I turn to glare at him, ready to raise my voice, but as soon as I do, he crashes his cold, hard lips into mine.

I scrunch my face in disgust and try to force him off me, but my strength is no match for his. It’s a terrifying truth that’s quickly sinking in.

He moves his mouth against mine as if he has no idea I’m pushing him away. His attempt at a kiss is sloppy and he tastes like stale beer, and I can’t get away.

So, after a few seconds of powerless flailing, I realize I have to change my strategy. I do all I’m capable of. I bite down hard on his lip, and he pulls back instantly in shock, licking off the bit of blood I’ve drawn.

With his vice grip still on my arms, his shock turns devious quickly. “Oh, that’s how you like it? A little rough? You’re naughtier than you led on.” He presses closer to me again with a smirk and my stomach drops. It isn’t the response I was aiming for. He’s determined, and I’m running out of options.

Dread sinks in and I squeeze my eyes shut.

“LET HER GO!”

Both of our heads snap in the direction of the deep, barking voice from the end of the hallway, and my heart stops in my chest when I see Kai crossing the distance toward us quickly.

“I SAID, LET HER GO,” Kai growls again. His eyebrows are pulled together in such a severe way, it scares even me.

Nick is motionless, his grip still tight on my arms as he watches Kai approach, but he rolls his eyes and sets his jaw as if Kai is just a nuisance. “God, not again. Just leave us alone, Lamont.”

Kai doesn’t hesitate. He grabs Nick by the back of his shirt and yanks him away from me in one easy pull.

In his drunken state, Nick’s hands fall from my arms and he stumbles backward, blinking at Kai in surprise.

I’m completely frozen in disbelief, flat against the wall as if I’m still being held there while Nick stands on the other side of the hallway, breathing hard. A devilish smirk is growing on his face. But he only has a second, because, without pause, Kai lunges at him, pulls his fist back, and plunges it into Nick’s nose with enough force to send him stumbling into the opposite wall.

Nick groans and clutches his nose, blood trickling from beneath his hand as he watches Kai in disbelief. “What the hell, man?”

Kai encroaches into his space again, glaring at him with more menace than I’ve ever seen from a single look. His fists are still clenched when he stops just inches away from Nick’s face. “Stay the fuck away from her.”

They have a staring contest for a moment, testosterone clearly boiling in their veins. Their chests rise and fall heavily in an almost animalistic way, as if they’re battling for dominance.

Dominance over what? Me? I have no idea. I can barely hear my own thoughts above the volume of my heart beating in my ears.

Nick lifts his free hand, points at Kai, and shakes his head, glaring and hissing through his teeth. “You’re an asshole.” He rights himself slowly. But just when I think Nick is about to turn away, he lunges at Kai.

I gasp as he shoves his hands sloppily into Kai’s shoulders, sending him stumbling backward. I think he might fall to the ground, but he’s prepared, and plenty sober to hold his own. As soon as he regains his balance, he grabs Nick by the front of his shirt and pushes him into the wall again with a slam, easily pinning his drunken figure against it.

“Don’t you ever touch her again,” he hisses so close to Nick’s face that their noses almost touch.

“Or what?” Nick spits.

“Or else you’ll have more than a bloody nose,” Kai growls.

“You don’t have any claim to her.” Nick jabs his finger in my direction.

“And neither do you.” Kai’s grip on Nick’s shirt tightens, and he shoves him further into the wall. “Now get out of here, or so help me, I’ll break your nose this time.”
