She turns to me and tries to flatten her hair with no luck. Her line of sight lands on my hand, which has turned a little bit purple, and then she crosses the room, opens her freezer, and pulls out a bag of peas. She steps forward to hand it to me and quickly distances herself again. “Well, it was incredibly presumptuous of me to think you were ok with staying the night.” She looks out the window again. “Especially after what everyone found out about us.”

I touch the bag to my hand and wince. “First of all, no one knows I’m here. No one saw me come in. And if they did, that’s their problem. I’ve got bigger things to take care of this morning than worry about gossip.”

She responds with a worried, creased brow. “You’re calling George?”

I climb out of bed and pull out my phone. “Yes, right now.”

“What are you going to tell him?”

“I’m going to tell him exactly what I saw, exactly what I did, and make sure he gets his hands on that security footage.”

She lets out a long breath.

I ignore her silent plea and make my way to the door, setting the peas on the counter as I pass. “There is no reason to protect Nick at this point.”

“I know,” she sighs. “I just don’t want to make a big fuss.”

I turn to her once more. I know she will continue to protest if I let her. “I have to go get my things for the day. I’ll be back in under an hour and then we can catch a ride to the theater together. I have my phone on me.” I hold it in the air. “Call or text me if you need anything. And lock the door when I leave.”

She nods and follows me across the room as I step out into the hall.

“You’re good?” I ask her once more, making sure I meet her eyes closely.

She sticks her head out into the empty hallway, checking both directions, and then nods at me.

I can see the anxiety remaining in her eyes, but I give her an encouraging smile. “I’ll be back soon.”

“Ok,” she replies in a small voice and then closes the door.

As soon as I hear the bolt click, I turn down the hallway and dial George’s number. The ring hums twice before he picks up. “Morning, Kai, what’s up?”

I clear my throat. “We need to talk about Nick.”

A pause. “What about him?”

I descend the steps to the ground floor quickly, trying to decide how to start. I’m so impatient to tell him, I haven’t planned my words. “Listen, I would wait to tell you this in person, but I want to make sure you know before he arrives this morning.”

“Goodness, what’s the problem?”

“He tried to force himself on Sophie last night.”

Another pause. “Shit.”

“I ran into them outside her door. He kissed her. Had his hands all over her. She was trying to push him away. I’m almost sure it would have progressed if I wasn’t there. I had to step in.” I pause this time. “I had to get physical with him…”

George takes a deep breath. “Are you ok? Is Sophie ok?”

I pull the door open to the street. “We’re both fine. She’s pretty shaken up.”

“Where is Nick now?”

“I don’t know. I assume he’s probably passed out cold in his room. He was completely hammered.”

George sighs loudly. “You think his intentions were sexual?”

“Absolutely, yes. And she was trying to push him away, but he wasn’t taking no for an answer.”

“Does Sophie want to make a statement?”
