“That’s it, Sophie?” Drew chimes in. “Just two? Damn, you’re easy…”

I shoot him a look of displeasure while Sophie peers at him with a furrowed brow.

He laughs. “You know what I mean. You’re a cheap date. In the best way. Two drinks and you’re already having a good time.”

I continue to eye him with a hard line of my brow.

“I’m not drunk,” Sophie appeals.

“Of course you’re not, Sophie,” Leah interjects, trying to save the moment. “This wooden floor is dangerous with heels. I’m surprised I haven’t toppled over yet.”

Sophie still looks embarrassed, and I can tell her confidence has been bruised badly by the event. Though, not as bruised as she’d be if I hadn’t caught her.

“So, what have the two of you been chatting about out here?” I ask Drew and Leah, trying to change the subject for Sophie’s sake.

“Drew’s been telling me all about his next project. It’s a comedy.” Leah replies, stepping closer to him and touching her hand to his waist like she owns him already. “What’s your next project, Kai?”

“Well,” I take a breath. “I’m actually on the lookout for a new gig.”

Sophie looks at me, interested. “Any leads?”

I smile. “None yet. But my agent has a few on his desk waiting for me when I get back.”

“Must be nice…” she says, turning her glass around in her hands but not taking a drink.

“What must be nice?” I ask curiously.

“Having potential jobs piled on your agent’s desk. I still do most of my searching on my own…”

Drew chuckles. “Man, I can’t remember the last time I had to search for a job…”

I glare at him again. You’re not helping, Drew.

Leah tugs his arm so that he has to focus his attention on her instead. “So, tell me more about this comedy.”

As they begin speaking to each other about a topic I doubt Sophie cares a bit about, I glance at her and take a deep breath. It’s time to test the waters. I can tell she’s into me. It’s written all over her face. But she’s self-conscious now after her fall. I have to boost her confidence again.

I step toward her and rest my drink on the high table next to us, intentionally placing my hand near hers. “So, what’s a gorgeous girl like you doing here at a party with just a friend? No boyfriend to bring along?” I let my knuckles graze hers just slightly.

She almost flinches her fingers away, but she quickly relaxes and presses them into mine.

A small grin plays on her face. “No, it’s just me.”

“I find that hard to believe,” I reply.

She takes another drink and brings her glass back down to the table, deliberately lining her fingers up with mine again. “I’ve been so focused on my career. I haven’t had time for anything serious.”

I smirk at her. I like the sound of that. If she doesn’t have time for anything serious, she must then have time for some not-so-serious things.

Enter: Kai Lamont.

“Who has time for anything more these days, anyway?” I laugh. “It rarely ends well and isn’t usually worth the heartbreak.”

She looks at me with a curious expression like I’ve said something profound.

“So, living in the city, you must come to lots of parties like this?” I continue, trying to gain a feel for her comfort level.

She’s looking at the place where our hands touch, deep in thought. “No, actually.” She glances up at me. “Not at all. Tonight is a bit of an anomaly for me.”
