“Sophie, come nice and close to him,” Marc says. “Kai, wrap the blanket around her, too. We’re trying to create a really sweet, intimate moment.”

I step practically into Kai’s half-naked chest as he wraps his arms around my back, enveloping us both in the blanket.

“Magnificent.” Marc steps back and studies us. “Yes, that’ll do just perfectly. Stay like that until we call you back.”

On the other side of the garden, a single camera is set up and pointed toward us. Marc retreats to it with everyone else.

“So,” I clear my throat again. It’s eerily quiet now and everyone is too far away to hear us. “What should we do?” I look only at his chest.

“What do you think Elaine and William would do?” Kai asks.

“They’d probably be smiling.” I raise my eyes to his.

He grins at my suggestion. The sun is hitting his eyes just the right way. I can make out every speck of gold and green that makes them so unique.

“Can you believe we’re finally headed into opening week?” I ask, trying not to let my gaze linger too long, but it lands on his lips again, so I tear it away to focus on the sparkling sun reflecting on the fountain.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve gotten this far. I thought you would have chopped my head off by now,” Kai says.

My eyes shoot up to his. He’s smirking. I raise a brow. “But, I did, didn’t I?”

He shrugs. “I probably deserved it.”

I shake my head. “No, you didn’t. This really hasn’t been as bad as I expected.”

Kai eyes me with interest as the camera shutter clicks away in the distance. “Seems like ages ago when you were so worried about it.”

I’m trying not to get lost in his eyes, but it feels impossible. I shiver. “Yeah, I really got worked up, didn’t I?”

“Are you cold?” Kai looks concerned.

I shrug. “I’m ok.”

“Come here.” He tightens his arms around my back and pulls me closer.

He’s warm, and I want to bury my head in his chest, but I fold my arms in between us and look up at him instead. “Thanks.”

He holds my gaze as the waning winter breeze tousles his hair. “You know,” he says. “George is right. We do have some pretty special chemistry. It’s a lot of fun.”

“I suppose.” My response comes out strangled and quiet; a lie that surely won’t convince anyone.

“You’re gonna miss me when this is all over, aren’t you?” Kai’s eyes dart back and forth between mine with a twinkle.

“What makes you so sure of that?” I feign offense.

“Because I think I turned out to be less annoying than you originally expected.”

I smirk. “Maybe I just learned to ignore you when you’re being annoying.”

“No, I think you learned to love it.”

We both go quiet at his choice of word. The heat that’s being generated beneath this blanket is making my thoughts turn to mush.

“I will miss you.” My voice is barely audible.

“We’ll keep in touch,” he says quietly and then raises a playful brow. “You still have three months with me.”

We’ll keep in touch. It sounds so clinical and impersonal. Keeping in touch means a text every once in a while or a follow on social media. In just a few months, this will be the end of the line for us. Perhaps he’s disappointed that he never got a chance for that casual fling. Or perhaps he’s glad he dodged that bullet.
