When we eventually part, he rests his forehead against mine, just like we did right here weeks ago. I close my eyes, trying to slow my heart rate enough to make sense of it all. “I don’t understand. What made you change your mind?”

“You did, Soph.”

When I open my eyes, he lifts his hand and trails it through my hair. His fingers are electric, leaving warm, tingling paths against my skin.

I shake my head. “But you were so against anything serious. I don’t want you to suffer through this just for me.”

He smirks as he takes my hands in his, squeezing them gently. “I can assure you, there will be no suffering going on.”

I search for any hint that he’s lying to me. “So, what if I told you I just want one night?”

He shakes his head. “Nope. Not an option. I want you to myself, Sophie. I want all of you, every day.”

I beam up at him, tracing my fingers across his knuckles. He was an unattainable dream. But this dream is suddenly a reality. I suck my bottom lip between my teeth, trying to hold back my ridiculous grin.

Kai lifts his hand and runs his finger tenderly across my restrained lip. “You’re going to drive me mad if you keep doing that…”

I smirk, kissing his finger and raising an eyebrow. “What are you gonna do about it?”

He grins and takes my hands again. “I’m going to take you out for a proper dinner so that we’ll just be together, because we can. And then we’re gonna get ice cream from that shop we’ve been wanting to try. The biggest size you want. No one’s telling you what to eat tonight. You deserve the indulgence.”

I smile. “Sounds like the perfect date.”

He beams at me. “I’m serious about this. I want you to know that.”

I rotate his hands in mine so that I’m holding on tightly, and I look deeply into his eyes. This is a big risk for him “You know…what she did to you…your ex…you trusted her, and she stole that from you …I would never—”

“I know,” he says with a small smile.

I lean in to kiss him again, and he lifts his hand to my cheek. He deserves so much more than he’s been given, and it starts with proving to him that he can trust me.

After a moment, he pulls back to look me in the eye. “And you can tell Dan’s cousin, the banker, that you’re taken.”

“I wasn’t really interested anyway.” I reach for my phone with a smirk. “Want me to text him right now?”

He grabs my hand. “Later. He can wait. I’m taking you to dinner.”

Entwining his fingers with mine, he leads me through the garden and back out onto the main road. We cross the street to a quaint café with outdoor seating and find a spot under strings of twinkling lights that have just been illuminated in the dusk of the evening.

Kai watches me from across the table with a grin and I return the expression as I unfold my menu. “I’m not sure I’ve ever seen you so smiley.”

He leans back in his seat and lets out a long, content breath. “I’m just…relieved. I’ve been wrestling with the idea of breaking my promise to you for quite a while now.”

I cock my head. “Really?”

Nodding, he presses his lips together. “I really did want to keep it. And especially after what you said to Nick about me being all professional and such.”

I wave his words away with my hand. “Yeah, but this is not like that at all.”

“I know,” he replies. “But still, I want you to know I had every intention of keeping it.”

Looking down at my menu with a smirk, I nod. “I think it was a losing battle from the beginning.”

He unfolds his menu too, but he sits forward and continues to watch me. “I shouldn’t have let you slip through my fingers last year.”

I peer up at him warmly. “I actually wouldn’t change any of it. It would have been so different that way. If we’d gotten together then.” I gesture back and forth between us.

Kai considers my thought. “You’re probably right. I was a different person.”
