I study her closely as she gazes shyly down again. Her words are so poised, but her posture is as unsure as ever. She clearly feels like she is just another one of my female conquests, and I’m intrigued that she cares so much. Most women don’t even give it a second thought. But the interesting truth of the night is that she really isn’t like the others at all. Not in fact, nor in my eyes.

I’m suddenly acutely aware of my hand on her back as she challenges me with these tough questions. “Probably not as often as you might think. But what matters is that I really meant it when I said it to you.”

I gulp nervously after the words leave my mouth. I’m starting to feel exposed with her, speaking in truth rather than just to gain a positive response. She’s making me feel a certain kind of way tonight that I’m not prepared for.

She looks up at me again and raises an eyebrow. She probably thinks I’ve just thrown her a line. She probably thinks everything I’ve said to her tonight has been a line. And often, they are. But tonight, they aren’t. These words flow so cleanly in her presence.

I can still see the interest in her eyes. They dart around my face, lingering a bit too long on my lips sometimes. If she really is going to leave with me tonight, it will be different. She’ll need some reassurance. She’ll need to feel safe. She’ll probably even want to talk and cuddle later on. I usually hate that. But with her, I’m actually kind of eager at the prospect.

I drop my hand from her back and turn to face her fully, now almost closer to her than I was before. When she turns to me, I look down into her eyes. “I really am being truthful, Sophie. You’re very pretty, and I’m glad to have met you here tonight.”

Her long lashes blink up and down like wings as she gazes at me. She’s so tiny and adorable in my coat that hangs loosely over her shoulders. I can feel the warmth from her body, almost pressed against mine.

She bites her lip like I’ve said something she likes, and then she smirks. “I’m kinda glad to have met you too.”

I touch my hand to her arm, which I now wish wasn’t covered by my coat, and I trace up and down gently. The moon is even brighter now, and the sky is a deep black. I glance to the left and find that Leah and Drew are nowhere in sight.

I look at Sophie again. “I think your friend has left.”

She turns her head briefly to check too, and then returns back to me. “I’m not surprised. She could barely keep her hands off Drew.”

I watch her expression, waiting to see what she thinks of their departure together. Is it something she approves of? She seems unfazed.

I smirk. “I can guarantee you he didn’t mind one bit. He had his eyes set on her from the start.”

The corners of Sophie’s mouth turn up as she watches me. “Just like yours were set on me?”

I suck in a breath, knowing she is very much on the same page as me now. “Yes, just like that…”

I look into her eyes, which are solely focused on mine. It’s now or never. So, I lean close to her ear. She smells like wildflowers and sunshine.

“Do you want to get outta here too?” I whisper.

FIVE

Sophie

I freeze.

The confidence I’ve managed to summon thus far dissolves the instant the heat of Kai’s breath hits my ear. My heart stops as soon as the words leave his lips, and when he pulls away to look at me, his eyes reflect the warm light from the nightclub behind me. They’re gentle and kind but also laced with an unhindered desire.

And then, I nod.

I don’t know how, and I don’t know why. No, scratch that. I do know why, but I can’t believe how easy it is to say yes to him. His close proximity is intoxicating; way more so than the mere two drinks I’ve consumed tonight.

I look into his eyes, and when he looks back into mine and sees my agreement, a grin grows on his face, so big it makes me smile too. His hand slides down my arm, and he intertwines his fingers with mine. He pulls me away from the railing and along with him back into the club and through the crowds toward the exit.

There’s something satisfying about being led through the club, weaving in and around the dozens of beautiful women, knowing that Kai has chosen me. No one else has caught his eye the way I have tonight.

In the lobby, I retrieve my coat from the attendant and turn it around nervously in my hands. But as I’m about to put it on, I remember I’m still wearing Kai’s. It’s so warm. I don’t really want to take it off. I look at him. “Do you want yours back?”

He winks. “Nah. It looks good on you.”

I grin and let him take my hand again as we walk out onto the sidewalk. He eyes one of the cabs waiting at the curb, and he turns to me with hesitation. “It’s about ten minutes to my hotel.”

The way he says it, almost like a disclaimer, makes it seem like he’s offering me one last chance to back out. But a ten-minute cab ride certainly isn’t going to be the reason I turn back now.

“Ok,” I reply, trying to smile encouragingly.
