When she returns and sits down on her bed to brush her hair, I speak up. “I’m sorry you didn’t get to stay.”

She looks up at me, slightly perturbed. “Not everything is roses and fairytales, Sophie.”

I drop my eyes to my lap. “No, it sure isn’t.”

She sighs. “But, enough about me. I saw your text. Didn’t you leave with Kai? God, he was GORGEOUS, wasn’t he? What happened? I wasn’t expecting you to be back here tonight.”

I shrug.

“Soph, what happened?” She scoots forward on her bed. “Did he…kick you out too?” She admits the truth of her own experience through her teeth.

I see the pain in her eyes, and I know it was hard for her to be honest about Drew, who she’s placed so high up on a pedestal.

“No,” I say quietly. “I left.”

“What? Why?”

I take a deep breath and close my eyes. “I wanted to stay. Really, I did. But I just couldn’t. I don’t know…this little voice inside me, just…ugh.” I run my hand down my face again.

“So, wait, walk me through it…you went back with him to his hotel, right?” Leah asks.

“Yes,” I sigh.

“And then what?” She watches me expectantly.

“We…” I pause, a bit reluctant to share the details. “You know…we, uh, made out…and it was going further.”

Her face lights up. “Ooooh…ok, Soph…baseball terms…how far did it get?”

I can’t help but smirk a little at her playful demeanor. It makes me feel incrementally better. I clear my throat. “He got to um, third-ish…”

“And that’s when you stopped him?” Her mouth drops open.

I groan. “I just… Ugh… It was good.” My mind takes me back again to his room, and his lips, and his hands. “Really good…” I blink the images away. “But, this one-night thing…he’s probably done this like…I don’t know, a thousand times before…and I don’t want to be another one of his conquests.”

“I doubt he’s done it a thousand times, Soph.” Leah laughs. “And you do realize that ‘really good’ is not a bad thing, right?”

I shake my head. “No, I know, I know. But I don’t want a one-night stand. As much as you wish I did.” I look at her pointedly. “I just don’t. I don’t think I ever will. I don’t want a guy sending me home in the middle of the night because he’s bored with me.” As soon as the words leave my lips, I realize how badly they’ll hurt Leah after the night she’s had. “Sorry…I didn’t mean…”

She frowns, but then waves me off and tries to smile. “Don’t worry about me. We had fun. A little fun was all I really wanted anyway, right?” A smile appears on her face, but it never touches her eyes.

“Did it seem like he wanted to see you again?” I ask her tentatively.

She sighs. “He has my number, but… I doubt it.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Seriously, don’t worry about me.” She runs her fingers through her hair. “I’ve done this before. I know about all the possible outcomes. This was just one of the unfortunate ones. But you…how do you know Kai didn’t want something more?”

I eye her skeptically. “Because no guy ever takes a girl home after only a few hours wanting something more. I know his type. He even told me he leaves for Chicago tomorrow and has no plans to return.”

Leah purses her lips. “Well, what did he say when you decided to leave?”

I picture Kai’s disheartened expression again. “He was confused… Sad, maybe? But now that I’m away from him and thinking clearly, I know I made the right decision.”

Leah slides under her sheets and rolls away from me with a yawn. “Alright, well you know yourself better than I do. And maybe you made the right decision for you.” She pauses. “If Kai would have really meant something to you, you wouldn’t be in your own hotel room right now.”

I gulp, wishing her words were the truth, but I know a small, curious piece of my heart wants to be there with him instead. I frown and slide back down into my bed, pulling the covers to my chin. “Well, at least now I’ll never have to see him again.”
