Nick’s frown suddenly disappears. “Hey, let’s play Truth or Dare!”

“What are we, thirteen?” Leah snorts.

“Ah, I miss that game!” Maureen chimes in. “Besides, what else are we gonna do?”

“How about anything else?” Sophie mutters, coming to stand at the counter next to me.

I nudge her playfully. “Scared?”

She looks up at me with her big eyes. “No. But I really hate Truth or Dare.”

“Me too.” I smirk, looking around at the others in the room. “But this group might be entertaining.”

She presses her lips together, and then she drains the last few drops of her beer.

I open up the fridge and retrieve two of the bottles I brought. I hold one out to her. “Do you drink Guinness?”

She takes it from me. “For this, I’ll drink anything.”

“Ok, ok, come on.” Nick gestures everyone over to the sofas. “You too Leah.”

She rolls her eyes as we all sit down. I take a swig of my fresh bottle of beer, hoping it will numb me enough to find the game at least a little bit enjoyable. Sophie sits down across from me, next to Leah.

Nick finishes his own drink and places the bottle on its side in the center of the floor.

“I thought we were playing Truth or Dare, not Spin the Bottle?” Maureen laughs.

“No, this is just how we’ll decide who goes next,” he explains.

I watch Sophie as she sits silently on the sofa. She’s staring at the bottle on the floor with anxious eyes.

Ok, I’ll start.” Nick spins it around on the carpet, and it comes to a stop in front of Brent.

“Truth,” he says.

“Hmm, let’s see…ever gone skinny dipping?” Nick asks.

Brent grins. “Um. Yes.”

“Ooooohhh. Brent, who were you with?” Leah chimes in.

“I’m sorry, your one question is up.” Brent winks and then spins the bottle. It lands on Leah.

“Dare.” She takes a long drink from her beer.

I notice Sophie is almost halfway through her Guinness already too.

“Ok, make the ugliest face you can come up with.” Brent grins.

“Is that all?” Leah rolls her eyes and sticks out her tongue.

He quickly speaks up. “And hold it for the next two minutes while we keep playing.”

She sighs dramatically, leaving her tongue hanging out of her mouth and her eyes rolled to the ceiling. “Wait, so how do I ask the next one then?” she says with a lisp.

Sophie giggles. I try not to melt.

“Brent can go again.” Nick laughs.
