“Dare.” He rubs his hands together eagerly.

“Lick the floor,” Leah replies simply.

“Really?” He gives her a look of disgust.

“Rules are rules, Nick,” I remind him.

“Fine,” he spits, glaring at me and then crouching down to the floor. In his drunken state, he almost falls over, but he quickly runs his tongue across the carpet.

“Ewwww…” Maureen squeals.

Nick smacks his lips, pretending like he enjoyed it. He reaches out and spins the bottle again. It lands on Sophie.

She stares down the barrel of the bottle silently for a moment before looking up at him. “Um…ok, truth.”

Nick smirks and taps his chin like he’s thinking hard. “First time you had sex. How old were you?”

Sophie goes completely still, and then her cheeks burn a vibrant pink. She gulps and looks down at the floor. Her hands grasp her knees tightly and she tries to laugh, but it comes out more like a gurgle instead.

I glance at Leah. The look she’s giving Nick portrays all kinds of disapproval.

Sophie shifts uncomfortably on the sofa. “Uh…umm… Well, uhh…” She hesitates. “I don’t know. Twenty-two, I think.”

“No, the first time, Soph. Not the last time. You’re twenty-two now.” Nick urges her on like she hasn’t understood his question.

She turns her eyes to him in defeat. “Yes, I heard you.”

Realization hits him. “Oh wow, really?”

“Nothing wrong with that,” Leah says.

Everyone else in the room has gone silent. Sophie’s discomfort is contagious in the worst way, and none of us know what to say. A question like that probably wouldn’t have fazed anyone else in the room, but Sophie looks as if she wants to sink into the sofa and disappear. I don’t blame her. I’d be nervous to admit something like that to the whole room too.

I hate Nick more and more with each passing moment.

Sophie shifts nervously in her seat again and her cheeks burn even brighter.

Nick laughs and takes another drink, watching her with devious eyes. “Aww, that’s cute, Soph. You’re so innocent. I should have known.”

Sophie doesn’t reply. She’s trying to smile, but there’s everything but amusement in her eyes.

I sit forward and point to the bottle. “Spin the bottle now, Soph.”

She chooses not to meet my gaze as she reaches in and spins it again. It lands on Maureen.

“Truth,” she replies.

Sophie takes a deep breath and looks down at her lap. “Um, how about…what’s the strangest dream you’ve ever had?”

Maureen claps her hands together. “Oh, I have the best one for this. Ok, so this one time, I dreamt that I was riding a purple unicorn through the streets of Miami, and we were pulling the president in a carriage behind us. It was like a parade, and we were the main event. Oh, and there were dancing monkeys and…”

I don’t hear the rest. I’m watching Sophie. She gets up to retrieve another beer from the fridge. Her movements are slow and calculated. She doesn’t really want to return.

In the meantime, Maureen has spun the bottle again. It lands on Leah.

“Dare,” Leah says.

“Ok…so, you have to kiss one of the guys in this room, on the lips.”
