I silently stand up and walk to the kitchen. I take an empty glass from the cupboard and fill it to the brim with cold tap water, and then I return and hold it out to him.

He looks at me, bewildered.

“Stand up,” I instruct without a smile.

He laughs and sets his beer on the side table, and then he stumbles as he gets to his feet. I push the glass toward him, indicating that he should take it.

He finally does and then waits for me again. “Now what?”

I step back. “Pour it down your pants.”

Next to us, Brent lifts his fist to his mouth and snickers. Maureen bursts into laughter.

Nick hangs his head to the side and laughs. “Really, man?”

“Rules are rules,” I reply simply, taking my seat.

He sighs and undoes his belt with one hand so that he can pull the waistband of his jeans away from his boxers. He takes another deep breath, glaring at his glass of water. He lifts his eyes to mine one more time and smirks. “You’re a prick.”

I return a tight smile as I wait.

Then we all watch as he pours the entire glass of cold water down the front of his pants, creating a gigantic, dark, wet spot all the way across his crotch.

Maureen is still laughing harder than anyone else, Leah is giggling into her hand, and Sophie is watching it all happen with wide eyes and an actual smirk.

I get up to retrieve another beer from the fridge. “I think that’s a good place to end that game.”

Leah nods and chuckles. “Need a towel, Nick? It’s ok, sometimes we have accidents.”

“Shut up,” he snorts, waddling his way to the bathroom.

I open my beer and lean against the counter, watching the rest of them laugh. The room looks brighter now. I’m content.

But on the sofa, Sophie is whispering something to Leah, who is responding quietly. They both get up and move to the bedroom.

I furrow my brow.

“TV still doesn’t work,” Brent sighs, as he fiddles with the remote again. “It’s almost a half hour to midnight.”

Maureen meets me in the kitchen and grabs another beer for herself. “Still rockin’ that hat, Kai.”

I laugh and pull it from my head, having forgotten it was there. “Thanks.”

“That was fun, wasn’t it?” She leans against the counter next to me.

I nod. “It was interesting.”

“I can’t believe you got Nick to do that.” She laughs. “He’s gonna hate you now.”

I nod again. “I can take him.”

Maureen pushes herself away from the counter and looks at me with a grin. “Did your ex message you back?”

“Nope.” I don’t actually know if she did, but I’m not about to check.

She cocks her head to the side and watches me. “When did you break up?”

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” I reply simply.
