Kai nods. “Yes, Broadway.”

“Oh? Which one?”

“The Glass Garden,” I reply.

He takes a sip of beer. “I heard about that one. Right on. Lead roles?”

We both nod.

He smirks. “Well, I bet that’s a bit of fun after what happened between you two.”

Nick is filling his glass again, but he stops, mid-pour. “After what happened?”

Kai has gone rigid. So have I. Maureen’s hand is frozen on her drink.

Drew looks back and forth between the four of us, and then he flashes me an embarrassed smirk. “Oh, shit, sorry. I figured everyone knew.”

Maureen looks at me. “Knew what?”

I let my gaze meet Kai’s. He glances away immediately, taking a large gulp of his beer. So, I sigh and turn to Maureen. “Nothing happened.”

Drew raises an eyebrow, looking back and forth between Kai and I. “I thought…didn’t you two hook up?”

Wow, ok Drew, you need to leave now.

“We did not hook up,” Kai replies sternly, setting his drink down hard on the table.

Drew furrows his brow, looking at me again. “But you went back to his place, right? Kai told me you left your coat.”

There’s a deep breath from Kai. “Nothing happened, alright?” He glares at Drew and turns to Maureen. “So, tell me more about that movie you saw last weekend.”

She stares at him coldly without responding and then focuses on me again.

Nick chugs an entire glass of beer and then pours himself another, ignoring Kai’s attempt to change the subject. “Well, something must have happened.”

Maureen stares at me with her jaw set. “You never told me this.”

Kai lets out a long, drawn-out sigh. “Nothing happened. This was almost six months ago. None of it matters, anyway.”

I glance at Maureen, who looks crestfallen. “Really, it doesn’t matter.”

She shrugs, looking out across the room as if she suddenly isn’t interested.

Drew raises his hands in guilt. “Wow, I didn’t mean to stir anything up.”

“There’s nothing to stir up,” Kai replies simply.

Drew presses his lips together and clasps us both on the shoulder again. “Right. Well, sounds like I gave you guys a lot to talk about. It was good to see you two, though. I’ll catch your show if I have time. Tell Leah I say hi.”

We both nod as he turns and leaves, completing the most awkward exit from a conversation that ever was.

Even though the music in the club still pounds loudly in our ears, you could hear a pin drop between the four of us. I wish desperately to be Brent in this moment, already home and free from social responsibilities.

Maureen finally clears her throat. “So, what did happen?”

Kai sighs again, closing his eyes briefly. “Look, there’s nothing going on. Last summer we kissed, just the once, and that was it. It was a mistake. We’ve moved on, and that’s all.” He looks at me deliberately. His eyes are cold; annoyed.

I stare at him for a moment, letting his words sink in. “He’s right,” I reply as evenly as I can. Kai’s words ring in my ear. ‘It was a mistake.’
