Kabyl chuckled as she made dinner. “A person who studies volcanic activities and gathers information to help predict eruptions.”

“Can I do that?” When she spoke, she realized that it felt right.

Elioth paused. “It takes a lot of schooling for it, but you might manage a specialist ranking. I mean, if you study and learn how volcanoes actually work.”

“Uh, they get hot, and they boil over.” Kana shrugged.

Kabyl laughed. “There is more to it than that. There are rock layers that slow or increase the dispersal of heat. You need to know how to read all of that before you can think of manipulating the melted stone.”

Kana blushed. “Ah, you saw through my clever plan.”

Kabyl smiled. “I remember wanting to try my power out with every substance around me. I froze paper, fabric, the floor, everything.”

Kana paused. “Elioth, do you have books on volcanoes?”

He nodded. “I do. Would you like to read one?”

“Yes, please. It feels very right.”

“Then you should pursue it.” Elioth got up and got a huge book. “It has a lot of pictures and charts.”

She took the book. “Here I go.” She wedged herself into a comfortable position on the chair, opened the book, and turned the page.

She read the book for six hours and then looked up and realized everyone had gone to bed. She closed the book and went to sleep.

Kana was eating breakfast with Elioth when he brought the book up. “How far did you get?”

“I made it through.”

“Excellent. So, what pressure does it take to break through a crust two metres thick.” He spooned up some oatmeal and grinned.

She looked at him, took a deep breath, and answered. She ate and answered for an hour.

Kabyl took care of the dishes and said, “So, she has the memory you were hoping for.”

Elioth laughed. “She does, and she doesn’t. If she is interested in it, it sticks. If not, it slides right off.”

Kana snorted and held her coffee cup. “He isn’t wrong.”

“So, you really, really like volcanoes.”

“They call to me. Don’t know why.” She sipped at the coffee.

Elioth smiled. “Then, you should find out why. There are six research projects operating in areas where you could see volcanoes in action.”

She smiled. “Really?”

“I will start sending queries to the different departments. When we get a response, I will let you know.”

Kana looked at his face as he brought out his communication machine. “You think they will respond?”

“Oh, yes. Your kind only comes to the dragon court every five hundred years or so. That is according to the books I have access to.”

She twisted her lips and smiled. “Only every five hundred years? It seems so much more distant.”

Kabyl looked at her seriously. “What do you mean by that?”

“I have a memory of being here before. Well, not here, but walking the world. It is so strange. It is like seeing through a curtain but seeing a world vastly different.” Kana smiled. “I see it when I dream.”
