Kabyl nodded. “I will come with you. I need to work on my cardio.”

“Okay, but don’t get too close. I am working on heat shields.”

“Noted. I will go first.” Kabyl laughed.

They got ready and into exercise gear, and then Kabyl started to run with Kana running after. It was a good way to start the day.

As her feet struck the sidewalk made of wood, she kept control, but her personal heat wave expanded around her, making a wide bubble that cleared huge swaths of the sidewalk and the business entrances.

She left the central drive clear so that the sleds and other vehicles could glide along.

Kabyl was doing well, but she was running through snow. Once Kana finished with town, she headed to the deep snow near the dogs and started running left, right, left again, around in a circle and around and around again until her heat began to fade. She quickly made her way back through the maze and headed into the house.

Elioth was looking at her when she came in. “What is that?”

“I made a maze for the dogs to run when they are bored.”

Elioth blinked. “How do you know they get bored?”

She opened her mouth and then closed it. “I don’t know. I just thought they must.”

“I see.”

She took off her boots and put them up to dry, then washed her hands and went to get something to drink. She stole a pinch of heat from the fire and warmed up while she made some coffee.

“So, I have learned more about the queen’s guard. Are you interested in learning about them?”

“Sure. Where is Kabyl? She was ahead of me.”

“She’s on a call.”

“Oh. Okay.” She smiled and had a seat in the living area.

Elioth took a seat with a cup of tea next to him on a small table. “Where would you like me to start?”

“There was a fire dragon?”

“A lava dragon. Yes. All of the queen’s guard were selected from orphans raised by dragon clans. They were trained in martial arts and were inseparable from the diamond queen.”

“Until they died.”

“Correct. It was an attack spurred on by wizards. The moments that were purchased by the attack of the guard managed to give the queen and her consort time to transform and destroy the attackers.” He sighed. “The royals gathered up the guards and mourned them. The attack led to the queen’s child being the first to be born in an egg and guarded zealously for sixteen years until a second diamond dragon emerged.”

Kana had to ask. “Did the guard get any shots in?”

“They took out all but three out of fifty. Many wizards were encased by molten stone. Others were found half-in and half-out of the walls.”

“Wow. I wonder when she is going to wake up.” Kana chuckled.

“According to onlookers, the whole battle took fifty heartbeats.” He sighed.

“Why did the mages attack?”

“They considered the diamond dragon tainted by djinn magic.”

“Oh. Well, that is unpleasant.” She smiled. “Ironic that they killed three guards with ancient dragon characteristics to do it.”

He snorted. “Fanatics everywhere can’t even see past their own noses. It is what they are known for. Take action and then sort through the wreckage.”
