“You didn’t let the dogs go after you made the path, so that is being responsible.”

Elioth came back in with a concerned expression. “Four of the research teams that I contacted have gotten back to me. One thinks that I am insane, and the other three would love to have you visit and host you while you are in foreign countries.”

“Oh. Where is best?” Kana was direct.

“Well, there is the Hawaiian monarchy, Iceland, and Japan. I would say that Hawaii has the greatest need. They have many active volcanoes. Iceland has a large volcano that is looking to go active. Japan is tectonically active. There is also Costa Rica. They are the ones that called me crazy.”

Kana frowned. “Why would they do that?”

“Because they don’t have a shifter population. They ignore the power that is contained within those like you.”

“Well, they aren’t very smart.” He chuckled and shook his head. “When the colonists couldn’t worm themselves into place here, they went there. The locals were confident they could defend themselves and sent the forest dwellers away and the shifters as well. The local supernaturals just went deep into the jungle and set up territories. They, however, are not the local government. That is strictly human and still fairly violent toward shifters.”

“Oh. Well, I don’t shift. Eltrinia said it could take years.”

“That might be because her dragon is new. Yours may be old. You will find out, I am sure.”

“So, this is something I have to figure out?”

Kabyl chuckled. “Your body knows. Mine did. I broke tradition and managed a transformation without a female dragon to show me the way. It saved my life and the life of this community.”

“Does she talk to you?”

“Sort of. It is like a feeling I have no reason to be feeling. She gets really excited at the edge of glaciers or during heavy snowfalls.”

“Oh. Well, where do you think I should go?”

“Well, you have a few choices.” Elioth smiled.

Kana asked, “Do you have books with details about those places, and would there be people who can translate for me? I don’t think they all speak the same language as I do.”

Elioth grinned and headed off to the office. He brought back four large books. “Trin sent these to you. They arrived at the store yesterday.”

Kana looked at the books. Each of the books had a reference to the different countries, and one was a current geological survey of active volcanoes. It looked like the rest of her day was settled. She had research to do.

Chapter Eight

Kana made her decision and nodded to herself over breakfast. “I know where I want to go. Now I have to figure out how to get there.”

Elioth smiled. “Where do you want to go and why?”

“I would like to start in the kingdom of Hawaii.” She prodded at her eggs and bacon. “They have a strong shifter community, are open to assistance, and their volcanoes are both close and at a distance to the population. I have room to screw up a little.”

Kabyl laughed.

Kana looked at Elioth. “So, how do I get there?”

Elioth smirked. “Your chariot will be here in three days.”

“Chariot?”

“Air ship. It’s on the way here right now. The only thing we were missing was the destination. I will let them know that you have chosen them, and their rep will be here soon.”

Kana looked at him as he left the table. “Wait, do you mean there are representatives just flying around and waiting?”

Elioth paused and smiled. “Only for the last week or so.” He disappeared into the office.

Kabyl smiled. “Well, it has been a lot of fun teaching you.”
