Kana shrugged. “I still want to practice as long as I am here.”

Kabyl chuckled. “In that case, suit up, and let’s go running.”

Kana smiled. “Ready when you are.”

Five minutes later, they were running, and Elioth was next to Kana. Elioth enjoyed the warm aura that Kana could maintain.

“Are you looking forward to the travel?”

Kana chuckled. “Would it be horrible if I said I was looking forward to the volcano?”

He grinned. “We all have different interests. Before I got here, Kabyl’s greatest wish was to be a peacekeeper like her father. She focused, trained, and then she turned into a giant frosty lizard. Her focus changed after that. Dragons aren’t normally peacekeepers, so she had to adjust not only her expectations but also the expectations of those around her.”

“You are saying I should do the same?”

“You should do your own thing. Analyze what your options are, and do what is best for you.”

Kana smiled and was about to comment when she felt a rumble under her feet. She paused. “What was that?”

Kabyl looked at Elioth and nodded to Kana. “Ready for that workout?”

“Uh, sure. What’s going on?” People from the town were spilling out and looking at the nearest mountain.

Kabyl nodded. “Kana, get ready. I am going to grab you.”

Kana looked around. “What’s going on?”

Elioth patted her shoulder. “Avalanche. I will get the dogs.”

Kana looked at Kabyl. “Grab away.”

“I want you looking for human heat signatures deep under snow. Got it?”

“Got it.”

Kabyl transformed and grabbed Kana before taking off with her. Kana pulled her heat in tight and watched the mountain get closer.

The tumble of snow was extensive. Miles and miles of collapsed snow covered the forest and mountain.

She found a bundle of heat signatures and tapped Kabyl’s claw. She was dropped and flared a wall of heat around her as she dropped through the fallen snow. The heat signatures were close, and when she touched the ground, she walked toward them. She found a house and melted most of the snow off the front and roof. The door opened, and a frightened family looked at her. “Hello. I am here to get you out. Can you dress warm?”

They were already putting on coats and snow pants. She turned and melted a wide path toward town. “Head that way. I melted the snow, and the walls are ice. The town knows about the avalanche and is waiting to help.”

The father frowned. “You aren’t coming with us?”

“Nope. I am going to call Kabyl over and keep looking for others.”

He nodded and took charge of his family, guiding them through the hall she had made in the snow. Kana stole heat from the fire in the home.

Kana climbed onto the roof and whistled. Kabyl dipped and flew over, snagging her and dropping her directly onto another heat signature. She dug out another family, made them a path, stole their fire, and moved onto the next one.

They rescued four families and another hiker. Kana also found a herd of deer that had been caught under the cover of pine trees. Heating the trees without blowing them up was the tricky part. Creating a slope on top of the snow was the hardest thing she did in that endeavour.

She crawled to the treetop that was visible, and Kabyl finished reinforcing the band of snow. The dragon turned and caught her up, carrying her back to town.

Kabyl set her down, and Kana crawled to the house. Kabyl transformed and picked her up, hauling her into the house and setting her in front of the fire. “You did good, Kana. The islands are a lot warmer.”

She shivered as she consumed the heat of the glowing coals. “Yes, but I am going to have to learn something new there as well.”
