She held out her hand and ate most of the bonfire. The heat pulled into her, and she felt better by the moment.

Kabyl was back to human, and Elioth went over to her, rubbing her shoulder and pressing his forehead to hers. They kissed softly and talked quietly while the kids went off to the ice pad that was the first thing created in the controlled melt.

Kana got to her feet and smiled as the families filed past her, heading home. She had restarted the fires she had put out, and the homes were no longer as cold as they had been.

She got hugs from the kids and thanks from the families.

Kabyl’s parents caught Kana up and helped her to the general store for a hot meal. They walked slowly and were nearly to the store when a large shadow crossed over them.

Kana looked up. “What the hell is that?”

Kabyl’s father chuckled. “That is an airship. It looks like they are early.”

“They weren’t supposed to be here for two more days.”

Mander smiled. “Don’t worry about it. Kabyl and Elioth are headed to the landing site. You are exhausted. Let’s get you some food and a place by the fire.”

Kana nodded. “Okay. That sounds good.”

She was sitting down, wrapped up and with a cup of tea. Standing had been easy, but walking was hard. The air was so cold it stiffened her up.

Morningwell sat next to her. “At least you know how to transform when the time comes. Our doctor taught Kabyl.”

“Yes, well. I will transform when it’s time. But yes, I do know how a dragon changes shape. I look forward to it when it is needed.”

It was nearly an hour before Kabyl and Elioth came through the doorway. Kabyl was scowling. “I thought we had more time. I wanted to spend those last few days in snowball fights.”

Kana shrugged. “Just because I have to leave doesn’t mean I will never come back.”

Kabyl smiled. “You had better. I want you to see this place in summer and feel the pulse of it all around you. It is very warm and very bright.”

Kana chuckled. “So, should I grab my clothes?”

“Please. They are staying near the airship until you arrive. They don’t like the cold either.” Elioth smiled.

She got up and hugged Morningwell and Mander before putting her cloak on and walking to the cottage with Kabyl and Elioth.

They gave her a duffel bag and helped her pack. Kabyl asked, “Is it upsettin for you g to move to a new place?”

“No. Just another adventure. I know your com code, so I can call you.”

Kabyl looked at her and sniffled. “You had better.”

Kana thought about the research she had done and asked her soul what to do. The hug lasted for several minutes. Elioth embraced them both, and they stood there in a hug for another three minutes.

Kana finally said, “So, how fast do folks from southern ocean countries freeze?”

Elioth chuckled and leaned back. “I am not sure what their limit is.”

Kabyl smiled and wiped at a tear. “Yeah. I guess you should get going on to your next adventure.”

Kana smiled and squeezed her friend’s hand. “I will tell you all about hot weather and bright sunlight.”

Kabyl shuddered. “Right. Bon voyage.”

Kana laughed and grabbed her bag. She flung the strap over her shoulder and smiled. “Okay. New life. New me. New adventures.”

She laughed. “I guess I had better go and wander over to the floating ship.”
