Elioth smirked. “It involves leaving this house.”

“Right. Here I go.” Kana walked to the door, exhaled, and left the safety of Kabyl and Elioth’s home.

The clear sidewalk made her trip far too easy. She saw a group of men, including Mander. He was wearing light outdoor gear, and the visitors were wrapped in fur from head to toe.

Kana walked up to them and smiled. “Hello, gentlemen. I am Kana Pyrar Lem.”

Dark faces turned toward her, and she smiled. They were all different shades of brown, but all had thick, dark hair. Two out of five had brilliant blue eyes; the others had alternate shades of black and bronze in their irises.

“Oh. Neat eyes.”

Mander chuckled. “This is the volcano dragon. She can use the power but not shift yet.”

One of the men stepped forward and nodded. “Miss Lem, these two are Alanu and Akamu. Twins and island guardians. It was they who alerted us to the issue with the volcano below the surface. This is Ikaika, Luano, and I am Koa.”

She cocked her head. “All shifters.”

Koa nodded. “Yes. We are. We went to the capital to ask for help. They directed us toward you. How do you stand this cold?”

“I steal heat, but I have had an excellent teacher who kept me from going too far.”

Mander grinned. “She is impressive, isn’t she?”

“She absolutely is.”

“But she wouldn’t have any idea how to deal with what they are asking. That’s all you, Kana.”

She smiled. “Well, I have gotten packed for a purpose. Shall we leave? Don’t worry. They are practical people. They won’t take offense. Plus, you five are turning a little blue.”

Koa nodded. “Please enter our ship.”

“Is there candy in there? Kabyl has told me never to follow men if they offer me candy.” She smiled, and the five men looked startled.

Mander snorted. “They are fine. I saw the writ from the capital signed by the senator and Trin. They are cleared to take you with them, and communication is to remain open.”

“Yes, sir.” She smiled. “I am not hugging you again, or I won’t get out of here.”

“Fair enough. All of the town is wishing you the best, but go because I think the kids have figured out you are leaving.”

Kana looked over to the ice field where the kids were playing and staring at the silver and gold bulk of the ship. They were coming toward the ship.

“Gentlemen, we are going to have to go now or spend the next hour here while the children explain skating to you in extreme detail. As well as the best way to make a snowball.”

The men grinned but nodded. Koa said, “Please follow us.”

She nodded, and to her amusement, one of the men took her duffel from her and carried it into the base of the vessel. There was a standard door, and the ship was flush on the ground.

It was like one of the yurts that she had seen but larger. The balloon section sprouted from the top like a bulbous flower with bands strapping it to the base. The exterior of the solid section was filled with windows.

She stepped inside without a backward glance and was surprised to see the interior was brightly lit and there was good air movement.

There were stairs, and as they walked along, the vessel elevated. Kana bent her legs as she was shown to her cabin for the trip. The man carrying her bag set it down and smiled. “We will be home in a few days. There is food and amazing views from the viewing deck. You can get familiar with our food.”

She paused. “I hope there is a lot of it. I am in need of additional calories or open flame.”

Ikaika nodded. “Open flame is not recommended. I will warn our chef. Are you settling in or coming out?”

“I will go exploring. I just need to know where I have to sleep.”
